As I was reading through the posts, I realized that a great majority of the people on this site are trying out for drum major or section leader. I'm trying out for both. I have a decent chance at making section leader, there are two sophomore sax/claris (that the bds don't particularly like) trying out, but our band needs sax more than clarinet. As for dm, I'm only a freshman this year, and there are more than enough qualified upperclassmen, so chances of this are really low. If/When you make it, feel free to post that here, too! I'm also curious to see if your school has other leadership positions - I know my BD's are thinking of adding some for regular concert band (something about a president?) but I'm not sure about that. or

Hello. I am sure you have read some of my posts...like I said...this has been a grade since the first day you stepped into the band room. Win with class and lose with class. Dont think your grade matters what you may or may not get...if you dont believe in yourself you cant expect anyone else to either.

I'm trying out for flute section leader, and maybe a bus chaperone. The buses are always in such chaos and I hate it.

Hey! You're scaring me. I'm trying out for drum major this year (I'm a freshman) and I don't want to make it. As I said above, I want it for Junior and Senior year, and want the experience of trying out and for the BD's to look at me closer for DM qualities. I want at least one more year of marching and playing and being SL before I can't do these things anymore.

I'm doing both. I want drum major, definitely. But I figure if I don't make it, I have a pretty good chance at SL. I hope. Maybe. :/

My bd picks section leaders, only drum majors have to try out. I think I'm in line to be low brass captain this year.

For captains you have to fill out leadership applications. It has a few questions and you have to write an essay as to why you should be chosen. For dm you have to do the same but you have to go throught a very long 2 hr audition. At ours it was open to the band and we had to conduct live band on fight song, do voice commands, conduct a song of your choice, march, and go through an interview...which for me was the scariest part. They made all of us who auditioned to go into the other room and one at a time we had to go in and do the interview. It was our bd, asst bd, and our previous dm. They all stared you down but they were also cracking jokes. Just if you have to do something like that just speak from your heart and dont say what you think is the right answer, say what you feel. It all works out in the end.

We have: DM's SL's DI's A President A Veep A Sec A Trez A Historian 2-3 Reporters (write the newsletter) 2-3 Chaplains And One School Owned Instrument Manager (me.) I am trying out for SL... I tried out for DM but didn't make it... that is it's own story, PM me if you want to hear me rant about it... If I don't make SL I'm going to be mad, because my section is LAZY and in need of some GOOD LEADERSHIP. I may march bass if that happens because the other girl with a big chance of making it... well it's hard for me to tell where i stand with her... and she's got some friends who don't like me who I'm afraid may influence her actions... yuck.

Voted other because we don't try out. With our last director, the band would vote for section leaders, and people in each section had 3x the votes in their section (like, a trumpet voting for trumpet SL would be 3 points a vote, and a 'bone voting for trumpet would be 1 point a vote.) That was cool because it allowed the other sections to provide some input and make an unbiased vote.
Now, our new guy doesn't do that. He actually hasn't said anything about any leadership. So, we don't have SL's or a DM right now. Probably won't till the second rehearsal, because he's laaaaaazy.

I chose not to because I thought I would be inexperienced and lack playing ability. Turns out my SL is even worse.

Ok so I'm not this year since I don't march... but next year I might apply to be a "Black Suit." It's the person who's the middle(wo)man between the directors (via headsets while they're in the box) to the people marching. Basically you get yelled at by the directors and you yell at the students. And you wear a black suit at games (hence the name).

I'm trying out for DM. We have a new BD so he's doing this thing where you have to come in for seminars in the mornings and fill out an application... the first seminar is tomorrow morning, 6am, which isn't that bad and he's going to this for 4 consecutive Fridays. Hmm... a few days ago my BD said that i "am going to be the one to lead the band to victory" and he walked away all serious and then we started laughing haha...

First, I have some questions... Are captains the same as SL's? That's what I am assuming... What does DI stand for? And what do the chaplains and the historian do?
I am pretty sure that we won't be having a treasurer when they make the new leadership positions because we have the Band Boosters, who run the fundraising and stuff. I just think they said secretary and president, and they'll probably add VP, too. I think it'd be cool to be a school owned instrument manager. If they had that position, I'd be the first one running...
Good luck to everyone! I think that if you're enough of a band geek to go on this site, then you are dedicated enough to be a good band leader. Hope you all make it!

The band "heirarchy" as it works in my school: - Directors, Techies - Drum Major(s?) - Leadership: The whole captains and SL thing is kinda weird because we have a brass/low ww SL, flute SL, and ww SL, a guard captain, a drumline captain, and then drumline section leaders. So... captains are technically a bit higher than SL, but it's not really acknowledged..
