I was looking at a band's website that I am considering (the NDSU Golden Star Marching Band) and they said that they pay their musicians a stipend for their time. I realize that this is band, and so said payment probably doesn't cover the cost of shoes, but can anyone put an estimate on how much it would be? Does anyone else have any information on this?

Depends what they're talking about- do they really mean stipend, or do they mean per diem? If it's per diem, it'll be a small amount, ostensible to cover food expenses if you're on an away game, for example- ours is usually around $20-25, or so.
If it's an actual stipend, then it could be anywhere from $25 to several hundred dollars- not much help, I know, but I can't really say more without more info. I know in our band everything is paid for *except* shoes and gloves, because we have a rather sizable endowment, but I also know that we're the exception, not the rule.

Ah, per diem, my favorite part of volunteer basketball games...such a great feeling... Anyway, spacermase's explanation is correct. I've never heard of a band giving a stipend to its members, but it sounds like a pretty neat concept to me. I wish we'd get some kind of stipend. Then again, we are getting brand new uniforms, and if we got a stipend too that might give the university or the athletic department an excuse to not send us on a roadtrip. Argh...

Same with Georgia's band. Whenever I hear the word "per diem", I always think of an ongoing gag we would run when we were in band. Whenever they would hand out per diem packets, my friend Mark would act like he was opening it up and yell loudly, "SIX DOLLAR PER DIEM!?!?!" There would usually be a reaction from someone who didn't know about the joke with a "WHAT?!?!?! ONLY SIX DOLLARS!??!?!" and go into a panic. We still say that at alumni band after all these years! ;D In fact, I did it when the alumni went on the pep band trip to Arkansas back in 2004. Brett passed out the per diem packets, and I said incredulously, "SIX DOLLAR PER DIEM!??!" He laughed and said, "I was waiting for it...." I did catch a few alums who weren't in band during it with "WHAT?? I DIDN'T BRING ENOUGH MONEY TO COVER THIS TRIP WITH ONLY SIX DOLLARS!" ;D

Well... I know for the band I am looking at, the "stipend" or whatev is $50. But hey, when you are as eligible for scholarships as I am, it's ok. Ha. Im assuming that the "per diem" is the amount issued to you on the away trips to cover food/ etc. costs?

The only thing I can think of is that it's a way to get people to join the band at that particular school (and to make all of the rehearsals & performances)? Maybe they have a hard time getting their numbers up?

Baylor has this for the brass (but not woodwinds, I think even for just men too...). At Baylor they get paid for each year they are in band, with the ability to "ask" for more each year. By one trumpet's third year he was getting 1000 a year, but that was I believe only because he was a soloist that he was so much. This is separate from the band fee of ~200 for shoes, food, Baylor fees, etc

The Marshall University Marching Thunder gets a $200 stipend for Marching Band, $200 for pep band, plus stipends for doing special events such as inauguration parades, etc.
Sorry if this doesnt help, I just glanced at the topic.

sometimes the "stipend" that a school pays you is actually the a reimbursement for what you paid to take the course.
