Hey, I'm having some trouble with my new director and I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but oh well.
Anyway, we got all new directors this year. We were expecting the winter drumline season to stay the same, as an old director said he would come back, but that doesn't seem like the case. My friend is on the drumline for the marching season, and he's heard that the cymbal line may be cut. I know that not many schools have a cymbal line, but it's still stupid. We had an amazing 6 person section, and this coming year, we would all be at least a one year vet. We've tried bringing the cymbals home once every few weeks to polish up some moves that we learned and have sectionals.
For me, I can't see why he would want our section cut. There would be no room for us on the other marching instruments as many others have a year or two experience with them. The pit is expected to be more than full, so we all think that if there isn't a section for us, we should just spend our time any money elsewhere, and write a small ensemble.
Does that seem irrational, or does it make sense to you? And I know that the person may have heard it wrong, but I would like to get your opinion, if this is the case, before it gets too late in the year to sign up for other activites.
Thanks for any help. :3

It's an accepted rule for directors not to change anything their first year of being the director, same with drum majors. I would say talk to him, address him as "sir", and ask very politely why he doesn't want the cymbal line. It may be he's had a bad experience with cymbals in a previous band. If that is the case, assure him that you can be different, explain to him that you weren't a problem last year and that you are now veterans. It may be that he finds the cymbal line excessive and thinks your talents would be better spent elsewhere. If that is the case, tell him that you don't see where else you could be, and that since he has enough people for a cymbal line, and they have enough experience, he may as well use them (if the shoe fits). You can also ask him where exactly he would like to see you placed-that's where you can play the "no room" card. I think a cymbal line is a good way to add a lot of fanfare to a band, and I REALLY wish I was in a band with a cymbal line, but that's just me. Best of luck.

Well, popping this back up as it's close to drumline season. When do you guys start (or have you started already?)
Usually by now (with our old director), we'd have started a month ago, but we just start in about a week or two. And thankfully we have cymbals, but we're not really doing anything, just giving the program more money as of what we've heard.
Also, what do you expect your line to look like? Do you get a new floor every year, or don't you have one? If you have it, is it screen printed or hand painted? And do you use shoes?
(Sorry for the questions, I don't get out much.)

Our drumline was supposed to have started a couple weeks ago, but our band has a lot of problems so i don't know. We keep the same floor from year to year. We march in socks

Having to bump again. Winter shows, anyone?
We haven't gotten all of our music, or started on the floor, and the first show is February 7th.
But seriously, anyone?
