well, i just ordered a couple new mouthpieces to try, (birthday present: coupon for a new mouthpiece + ligature, cause i've been borrowing an old mouthpiece from my teacher because mine was deemed too harsh) so i'm just wondering, what kind of mouthpieces to the bass clarinet players on here use?
i have a selmer C* and am borrowing a vandoren B30 from my teacher.
I ordered a Clarke Fobes San Francisco (CF) and a Roger Garrett (MO).

The C* is supposed to be the best for low reeds (saxes and claris) and it's the general standard where I am (I have one for my cbass) but I am too cheap to order one for my alto...

I have a C* on my alto, and it was rediculous how much better it was compared to my old plastic one. I could get SO much more air through the mouthpiece.

I really need to quit being cheap and order a good mp... But I am buying a new clarinet this summer, and all the stuff hat goes with it will leave me quite broke even though my parents will be helping me with the cost.

^I assume you are talking about the L300 Alto? Yeah, I can see that. Your sound will probably change enough for the better that you won't need one immediately, if you know what I mean. It would probably be better to be accustomed to the sound of the clarinet so that you can really tell how your sound changed. You might want to check out this link because it is much cheaper than anywhere else. The C* is $170 there, about half price. I actually bought it from our local music den for $100, and didn't realize what a good deal that was. The list price is like $315! Probably because no one wanted it... 1stopclarinet.stores.yahoo.net/alclmo.html

Oh no... I'm buying this Bb for college... Edit: The horn I use for school is the 300 series alto. The only problem with the 300 series alto is that they're bass to alto altos, not Bb to alto altos. Other than that, they're the best money can buy. Sorry Buffet- Leblanc wins here. But I'm not buying an alto until I'm in college.

Bass to alto altos are designed for a bass player to switch back and forth. Bb to altos are designed for a Bb player like myself to switch. Also called "curve neck" and "straight neck", respectively.

Oh, I've never heard/noticed that... well, considering I'm just an alto player, it wouldn't matter too much ... unless I bought one and it felt funny ... is it possible to try a different neck? I know they sell barrels, but I don't know if you could find a different alto neck. I don't know what mine is. I don't know if there is absolutely no curve in the "straight neck" ones, but mine has about a 120 degree angle, so I would think it was a curve neck.

Oh no... Straight neck is the average alto, with a 120 ish angle. Curve neck is like mine, with a double turn like a bass clari.

Hah! There is also a nice comparison there of nice new clari that I would die for, and old school clari that I wouldn't particularly jump for (is this an actual pic of yours? it probably plays better than mine anyway...). Do you know why all nice altos are closed holed and my icky plastic is open holed? My flute friend always talks about closed vs open, and I assume that would transfer to clari. And bass is open holed wherever possible, too. Maybe its a selmer thing...
