Apart from the contra bass clarient we have, which doesn't seem to be all that rare... We have a dinosaur of an alto clarinet. Yes my friends, we surely do. The funny thing is that the girl who played the alto clarinet in our quartet last year also plays the contra bass. =P

Since I last posted, I've seen a few more rare instruments.
The University of Alabama Wind Ensemble had a Contrabass clairnet
At the University of Alabama Honor band, there was a Fluglehorn solo in Richard Saucado's whirlwinds. There is a fluglehorn player in a local high school band.
At the University of Alabama Summer Music camp, there was an english horn solo in Bridge between Nations and Alfred Reed's Seventh Suiet for Band. At All-state, there was an english horn solo in Come Sweet Death.
At the Univerity of Alabama Summer music camp, the flute choir had a alto flute.
One of my orchestra directors plays piccolo trumpet beautifully.
And last (but definately not the least) at the University of Alabama summer music camp, one of the tuba players got out a contrabass trombone. It was awesome. He played it with a tuba mouthpiece. Now I'll admit, it wasn't the nicest sounding thing in the World, but it was still cool.

ABand ((Top rank. There's A, B and C)) has a paperclip contrabass clarinet. There's only been 8 paperclips made in the whole world, ever. At least, that's what I understood. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

a little bass clarinet. Eb maybe? Then there was also a senior last year who played Eb clarinet. My friend has a C trumpet. And a senior last year had a sophrano saxophone. And my friend who marches w/ a senior corp brought his G baritone and later G euph to class/practice once. Also this guy marched fluglehorn last year.

We had a marching bari sax at our school one year. He had to wear a harness. Surprisingly, he only marched for one year.

We had a marching bari sax at our school one year. He had to wear a harness. Surprisingly, he only marched for one year. Should I march with the bari this season? Anyway, the upper wind ensemble has a contrabass clarinet, and there are two in the all-conference band, where they also have an English horn, which I consider to be rare because I'd never seen one before. But that's just me.

Oh, you should march bari! See how long it takes before you topple over, or are you going to make it through the season?

After the school's been open for 11 years, we get a new BD. He goes into the back closet and finds a flugel horn that's never been played just sitting there. I"m not sure how rare flugelhorns are, but I'd hever seen one before thi year. We also have a contrabass clarinet, but it has leaks out the wazoo so our BD is using it to hold up a shelf at the moment. poor instrument. One band we saw at festival randomly had a contrabass and contra alto clarinet in it. It was very happy indeed. Other than that... I can't say I've seen many rare instruments.

Our school supposedly has a flugelhorn, but not even the 1st chair trumpet has seen it, so it's probably not going to emerge out of my bd's office anytime soon.
