My last orchestra concert featured an oboe d'amore.
A year ago, I played in a community orchestra that had a contrabassoon.

I don't know if people would consider these rare or not, but here' goes
At district honor band, we have a contrabass clarinet and a string base. That's about it.

At All-State last year we had a contrabassoon player. I think they hired that person or something, because I know the person wasn't one of the students. The conductor wanted a contrabassoon for Lincolnshire Posy. We also had an english horn soloist for Escapade.
Do electric wind instruments count? I tried one out at All-State last year when they had stands set up with instruments that you could try out. It's a lot of fun.

At OMEA All-State Orchestra there was a part for the F trumpet...I don't know if that's uncommon for Orchestra, but a Sophomore trumpet player had to transpose from F to Bb. There was a Soprano Sax solo, and the first chair Alto wasn't told to bring a soprano sax, and so he had to get one right then and there. And there was an English Horn solo. And the 4th chair oboe player wasn't told that she was to bring an english horn, either. So that was pretty weird. I didn't think they had english horns in a band. And the soprano sax was like really out of tune..I don't think the first chair alto had ever played soprano before...you can only imagine from there, right?

We have a contrabass clarinet player, sometimes, in our Woodwind Ensemble. I also saw a subcontrabass clarinet at a community orchestra performance at my friend's church. They even had a contrabass tuba, which I thought was a sousaphone. It was so cool! I just realized that the marching band in Mr. Holland's Opus uses regular French horns. That's sort of uncommon.

The 4-H band I was in a couple years ago, you had to march whatever you played...so there were marching bass clarinets (which is odd around here), french horns, marching bells...those were funny looking, there would have been a marching oboe but the oboe player was a field commander.
And we had an Eb contrabass clarinet in honors band my freshman year, he had to sit on a stool and was way higher than everyone else, so where do they put him? mid left section, second row! Idiots.......

Ooohhh...how about an octocontrabass clarinet? It plays an octave lower than the contrabass clarinet (so a total of 3 octaves lower than a soprano clarinet). There's like only been one ever made, and Mr. Leblanc owns it. OMG!!! It goes BOOOOOMMM!!!

In wind ensemble my freshman year of high school, we had a contrabass clarinet.
Our bassoon studio owns a contrabassoon which has been named "Tiny," "Tiny's" case is taller than all of the girls in the studio, so it takes two people to move "Tiny" when one of the seniors (who is about 8 inches shorter than the contra) has to haul it to a rehearsal.
