so i'm not sure how many of you get on here during the winter months, but i thought i would post this while i was thinking of it..
lately, when i practise oboe, my right arm has been giving me trouble. sometimes i'll have sharp pains in my elbow, occasionally going down to my wrist. and today, the bottom half of my right hand is numb, and my wrist hurts as well. it doesn't matter how long i practise for. this hand/wrist pain today happened just after 15 minutes of practising. i was wondering if anyone else had that problem or had heard anything about this happening.

My better half is a Physical therapist. The first thing she thought of was carpal tunnel then she said maybe neck/back posture BUT go see a doctor and let him/her know you need talk and not just a quick “Hi-Bye-here is a prescription”. You may be referred to an Orthopedist or even a Chiropractor if it has something to do with the back
In the mean time, first, if you are taking lessons, check with your instructor on “proper” positioning of the hands and instrument. Depending on how much texting/computer work you are doing, you should back off the texting and see about getting a wrist support for the keyboard/laptop.You may even try using a wrist splint (support) at night to keep the wrist straight.
Take it easy and get better.
