Okay, so there' this kid in my band who was technically enrolled to my school at the beginning of the year and he marched with us. but he got sick in the middle of November and he dropped out at the semester. he is now going to a credit recovery school. his mom is our choir director. he gets to come to band period every day and gets to go to all-state band AND gets to go to contest. does this seem fair to you guys? i think it doesn't. he also came back and got to play 1st part after he got like third before he dropped out of our school

One of my good friends has a condition that caused her to switch to an independent program outside of the school. She had to leave around October, and hasn't even been able to come back to school. Since the kid in your band was gone so long, it's not really his fault he has to make up school at another place. You can't really help it if you get a long-term sickness. He's lucky to still be able to play in the band (my friend can't), and that's up to the school to decide anyway. (Is your band an actual class that you get a grade in?) No, it's not really fair he got first part (unless he re-auditioned), but it is fair he is able to audition for all-state. He shouldn't miss that opportunity because he was sick.

Okay. so...this is to nchsbandrocks. if the student re-auditioned and deserved to get first chair then that's great for him. you said he has been at band everyday and comes so that, to me, is completlely fair. he can't help he is sick and that is not his fauly, so he should not be put out because of an unfortunate circumstance.
one of my GREAT friends has been sick since October. (stupid doctors. never listen to them!!!) anywho....she is a great clarinet player and she has missed quite a bit of school...including band events. to me it sounds like you are saying that my friend shoud be knocked back down to last chair because of not being at school. she can't help it and neither can your friend. give him a chance and if he deserves it, that's incredible. it takes a lot of strength to play and instrument well, let alone while your sick. best of luck.
