as a senior this year i was assistant flute section leader, last year i was section leader. At the end of the year banquet i had to announce he 14(now 15) year old who got my position without applying for it.when i asked the director why he told me "its not something you did wrong,or could greatly improve on,she's just better than you" this year i have been nothing bt gracious with her and i dont blame her for the BDs failings but her and the rest of the leadership(which 3/4 is younger than me) provide no leadership, often they are the problem, then in front of the band they undermine authority when i try to do what needs done,so finally i after one occurence i simply walked out and handed in a letter of resignation.I have never been so happy because finally i have controll over my position in band. My question, did i betray the band? does it make me a quitter? I did what was best for me but im afraid that the BD will hate me because i gave up,i dont want backlash from him.

update,im really happy with my decision. Its time for the band leadership to sink or swim without me. Often they sink, a few times they've done alright.less is expected of them during the off season but we'll see how it turns out. im never gonna be in the good with my director, that just doesnt bother me any more though.
