Like most people, we had a competition yesterday. Friday night, our head drum major was doing the Hannah Montana "Hoedown Throwdown" dance before we had to leave for a football game.
Somehow, through whatever amounts of planning, he, the other two DMs, our two guard captains, and our two percussion captains decided that they'd put together a salute for it. They ended up doing the salute for the awards acceptance, in which we won all the caption awards and 1st place in our division (there was only one other band that we beat by 15ish points). It was an elaborate salute, ending with the band members saluting and the guard doing the splits.
Everyone seems so overjoyed by the salute.
I thought it was cool, but I didn't think it was suitable for awards. If you were a band member from a different school and saw this at awards, what would you think?

Since I make a point to limit my exposure to all things Hannah Montana-related, I probably wouldn't recognize it for what it was.
In any case, I've seen stranger salutes over the years. Not many, mind you, but they've definitely been done before.

let's be honest, the standard awards salute gets boring. my high schools drum majors would occasionally mix it up a bit. we did the same thing for winterguard salutes where there aren't the same standards expected.

Personally, the thing that would bother me about it would be if I were in a different band, and I would have to sit and watch them do the whole drawn out thing, taking up the time before awards was over. That's the worst part for me; my uniform is skimpy and awards are COLD. Plus, idk...Don't take this the wrong way, because if you guys won all those awards you're obviously a band with talent, but sometimes when a band takes home everything like that, and they just keep doing the long elaborate salute, the bands who don't win are just kinda like, "Oh my GOD, just get over yourselves." You know? It's a little irrational, but the thought comes up nonetheless.

I agree with Stalker. Maybe if you did it once that'd be fine, but if you sweep the whole competition, it might get a little long and redundant after the 6th time doing it. No offense intended, by the way.
I don't know what that dance looks like because I also try to avoid anything Hannah Montana related, considering the Cyruses live(d?) in my hometown lol.

We're really not that great. Another band beat us by two points, but they were in a different class and took sweepstakes instead.
Luckily, the DMs only had to do the salute once because they gave out the captions and 1st place at the same time. It would be terrible if they had to do it so many times. @___@ But it was still the whole "pop it, lock it, blahblahblah" all the way to "That's how we roll".
I like fun...but at appropriate times. For instance, something short and playful or at an informal event. Our DM last year did a "Walk Like an Egyptian" salute at a game because our theme was Nefertiti, and yesterday, another school in our district had two percussionists make up a song using a vocalist and a ukalele about each HS band in our district. xD
