I'm having a problem with my section not following my directions. They always have to retort back with a "witty" comment, or just something stupid.
An example: "Hey guys, please get set up in an arc; tubas on this side, trombones on the other." A person from one of the sections: "Wouldn't it be easier to put the trombones on this side and the tubas on the other?"
Pretty much, they don't follow what I say right away and talk back. I have to reason with them to get them to do it.
Please help, I can't have this kind of behavior going on the rest of the school year.

Ugh, I understand how that is. That's how a lot of my band's acting, it seems (either talking back or not doing anything).
Try using less "please" and more "do it now". Don't come off as arrogant, just don't give them room to talk back.
Good luck getting those kinds of guys to shape up. Oi. @_@

i have the same problem, and seriously, the "do it now" is the ONLY way! and that still doesn't work, it's very irritating, if it gets to be to big of a problem though, maybe you could talk to ur bd?

Ya... my friend is drum major and she gets so mad when we will have a meeting and then the people don't wait until they are dismissed to leave.

depends on how much you care if people like you.and how much power you offically have. i dont care what people think ( they hate me anyway) and i have the support of the band parents, so i tend to call or e-mail the offenders parents. My method, i give the instruction if someone talks back i repeat the instruction and add to the end " so and so,lap after practice" you can also make the person stand in the middle and play their show, have everyone else comment on it, lap or push-ups for every mistake.
