It seems our director, principal, and super intendant all refuse to even think about getting uniforms for our school.
Our band program is pretty well respected, state-wide. We won a contest at Disney land a few years ago. Our marching band makes one appearance a year, because we are a 'jeans and tee shirt' band. We were invited to the Inauguration but had to decline because we don't have uniforms. Now, another event is coming up at UW called Band Day, where local high school bands all pour into Husky Stadium and play a song at half time. It's all fun and stuff...unless you're the only band without a uniform!!
Now, I know getting a uniform by Sept 12 is out of the question. But about how much would a set of uniforms cost? I'd like to say there is about 100-150 members in the band (I haven't seen how many sophomores are coming in). Our BD has mentioned having fund-raisers for uniforms, but it's really just a big joke. So, how much would 125 (or so) uniforms cost?

Ours were about $800 per uniform. This includes: trousers, jacket, helmet, and plume. Not even gloves, (gauntlets for drum majors) and the shoes which add up to about $40.
So.. 125 you say? Well, we'll go with the cost of my uniform and say your total is 100,000. Ouch. But uniforms are different, so they could be cheaper.

Our band makes an individual pay for band pants and shoes, so the cost could probably be less on the total the school actually has to pay for the jackets/helmets/plumes. Needless to say, they'd hike band fees up. A uniform is expensive, like jazztastic said.
Do you guys have a lot of fundraisers? Like Entertainment books, candies, etc? More homemade ones like bake sales, car washes, and other fundraisers could help, if you get enough people who want uniforms to band together. You'd all have to be committed though.

any high schools near you with the same colors getting new uniforms? they'd probably sell their old ones for a pretty descent price. you'd just have to hope they're in good condition. also, if you wanted new uniforms, you probably wouldn't have to go with top-of-the-line custom Fred J. Millers. There are a lot of websites like bandshoppe.com that have stock uniforms in several different colors. Usually the way it works it that (I think) the band department gets a pretty good sized private donation and buys new uniforms. Every year after that, members would have to pay a uniform insurance fee. it's usually $70-80 per year. new members also have to buy gloves (about $10) and shoes (about $35). these would only have to be bought the first year, unless the gloves are totally ripped and the shoes aren't wearable anymore. usually, if a uniform is returned in good condition, a portion of the insurance fee is returned to the member.
the only things that are really essential for a band uniform are the bibs, jacket, hat, and shoes. gloves, gauntlets, spats, capes, etc. are really just extra decorative crap that would just add to the overall cost.

I'm actually working on uniform design as a side business to my fencing one....just waiting for my first prototype to arrive to see if my maker can follow instructions.
The cost would be lower than Stanbury or FJ Miller, but I'd have to see how the uni comes out and what my cost is...definitely not in the multiple of hundreds of dollars per unit range, tho.
