So, this is my first year on sousa. I'm normally a tubist, but in past seasons I've played baritone. This is now killing my shoulder. Any ideas on releaving pain?

I have to tell you, first year is hard. It is my first year as well! I know how painful it is, but once you have had a while to get used to it (sorry if your band camp just started!) you stop feeling/get used to the instrument. Our band camp started in June, so I am very much used to it. Maybe you'll feel better next year.
But other than shoulder pads and relaxation, I don't know what to tell you! I'm sorry!

I haven't marched sousa myself, but just from a general athlete's perspective, it might help if you make sure you're not overly tensing the shoulder your sousa is resting on. If you're trying to help support it by tensing that shoulder, it'll get even more sore, so make sure it's relaxed.

Ha, I've worked on not tensing, and after three days (our band camp is/was this week.) it's getting better. Thanks! Although hot showers are my new favorite things. I think the local YMCA''s hot tubs will be seeing me a lot this marching season.

I'd imagine it will get easier as the season goes on, as well, and be easier next year, because as you build muscle on your shoulders it will add cushion and help it not to dig in so much. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks.
Lesson learned today: Don't wear an undershirt with a larger seem on the shoulder. It rubs the wrong way and makes your shoulder feel sunburnt. That's not too nice with a sousa.

To solve pain you will need...... 1 pillow, 2 large zip ties.
Put pillow on horn by shoulder. Zip tie on.
Also. put icy hot on your shoulder. Then wrap a blanket around your entire arm. It will help immensly

They sell Sousa shoulder pads that give you more cushion. You might not be able to use it in performances, but it can make a big difference during rehearsal.

also my first year on sousa. You really just have to get used to it and in the meantime you have an excuse to get that hot guy in band that you like to give you a shoulder rub.
