So I went to visit my former high school band yesterday. one thing i noticed is that the band is smaller than it has been the last view years. i remember we used to have upwards of 30 flutes, and now they're down to maybe 10. the guard lost eight and only gained 3. anybody else noticing this in their bands?

My high school band shrank as soon as my class left, there is a gap for a few years where there are very few incoming musicians, also our BD is on a lot of parents' list so a lot of kids are choosing band, scouts, church over band. Also we had upwards of 50 seniors my last year and my brothers is maybe 30?

Our band has dwindled since 2005, its peak year, I think. My freshman year we had about 150-160 members. Last year was 130-140 or so. This year...the returning members barely tops 100, but I don't know about freshmen counts yet.
I don't know if it's so much the economy; a new high school opened up, which took a third of my class and the classes younger than me.

My HS band is actually bigger than we were last year... Though the majority of the band (seriously, probably half) is freshmen.

We had 72 people last year, and only lost 5. We have 77 people this year, and are losing 21. O.o

I noticed in high school that the number of people in my guard dropped every year as more and more people couldn't pay the money.
College band on the other hand, has expanded rapidly.

Our band has grown to a crazy multitude this year. We had 100% returning members from last year, and we gained about 20. And our guard went from 2 to 24. We have lost a few people, but not that many really. And this years beginner band has. . . 100 kids in it? It's the biggest beginner band our school has ever had. I guess the economy isn't effecting my town very much.

This year, we graduated our largest class ever, and got our smallest freshman class ever. Our band went from ~125 to ~100. Strangely, our flute section doubled in size, but our low brass section got cut in half. I wouldn't say it's as much the economy as kids quitting band between middle and high school.

yeah, it just seems like overall the band is smaller. maybe it's because they were supposed to have legit auditions for woodwinds and brass this year. drumline always does, but guard almost never does because recruitment is hard enough.
