It seems my band director has fallen into what appears to be a bout of laziness. I can't say for sure, but it appears that way to me.
Last year, everyone had a month in advance for drum major auditions; we all knew what was going on, and who was auditioning so we could attend the auditions (on a Friday after school). We also had a little bit of a heads-up for section leader "auditions", and they were chosen the last week or two before school was out and posted on the band room doors.
Fast forward.
This year, no one really knew what was going on with drum major auditions. They were held on the Thursday of a jazz concert that people were setting up for. Many of us couldn't attend to give our input, and there was only maybe a week and a half notice beforehand. The DMs were announced at our spring awards concert.
As for section leaders, he told us he'd post something on the doors. He never did. Later, during the penultimate week of school, he had SL hopefuls fill out a form, and told us we'd get an email about who made SL/ASL the week after school was out. School's been out since June 12, and band camp starts on August 10.
Many people also use school instruments for marching. He claimed he'd put something up on the band's website for when to pick up a school instrument, but all we got was, "BUY THE 2008 SEASON DVD!!". I went out and rented a picc to practice, and another one of my friends is frustrated because he can't practice baritone.
We also haven't gotten our information packets - the ones that tell us how much fees are, what to expect out of band, shirt size order forms, etc. He's making freshmen buy their own pants, shoes, and dresses instead of taking orders, too.
We're completely left in the dark here, and no one knows why. Colorguard and percussion are doing fine; they've been having rehearsals since the beginning of July. The wind players have no idea what's going on. I don't know if I'm just being whiny, but the way I see it, our BD's just not on top of things.
I've tried emailing him, but I've gotten no response, and the same happened for another person.
Oh, but he has time to check his Facebook and play in community bands a half-hour away from home.
Sigh. :\
