So, anyone else here not compete in field shows?
Our director from my first season came back, but the program really went downhill last year, so we just can't compete this year. It costs too much and our numbers are dying. So, we're doing parades and football games. Apparently we're working with the danceline and cheerleaders to do some stuff to get the crowd more involved.
Just wondering if anyone else does this. I know why we're doing it and all, but it just hurts to not compete and I would like to see how other people have/would have responded to this.

My high school band never competed. It wasn't because we were bad or small (Rose Parade 05, 250 members!), we just didn't compete. My advice to you is to just enjoy the season, enjoy the lower work load/stress level since you will have a lighter schedule. And keep the "This year is lame since we're not competing" comments to a minimum, it'll help band morale, and I'm pretty sure your BD isn't totally thrilled about not competing either.

My high school band didn't compete either. It was because my band director couldn't stand marching season, so he sure wasn't going to spend the extra time for competitions.

^ Same here. That, and we can't get anyone to march in a straight line while they're not playing, let alone while they're playing. And the playing... well, that's another thing. As a matter of fact, you mention the idea of "marching band competitions" to anyone at our school, and they'll think you're joking. Our band has NOT competed probably at least for the last 20-some years that our bd has been here. It is possible for marching bands to not compete... they just exist for a different purpose.

yeah, non-competition bands usually exist to add to the atmosphere at sporting events and parades. most college bands don't compete and a fair number of high schools don't compete as well. the hard core competition bands (like my high school) tend to bore the average football audience because we're not playing well-known music. a non competition band can please a football crowd by belting out Blood, Sweat, and Tears. a competition band can please judges, but will make the football crowd bored.
anyway, use the extra time you're likely to have by devoting it to something else such as your studies, a job, or if you're a senior, college applications!!

I would be so depressed if I found out we weren't competing at all. I think I could only enjoy being a member of a non-competing marching band if it a really big and really good band that actually kept the football audience listening. Unfortunately, my school band, like a lot of others, does not get that kind of respect during football games, so I would feel like learning a whole field show just do entertain a talking audience would really worthless. There would be no thrill at all, and I'm sorry you're in that situation... but as long as you're not a senior, you can just use this year to help out as much as possible with rebuilding the program so that you can get to the greener pastures ahead.
