Sadly, on August 11, 2008 one of the freshmen trumpet players passed away. I don't know how though but I think he had a heart condition He was only 14 YEARS OLD!!!! but anyway at the wake my band director was there and he looked like he was still kinda shocked about it he didn't cry...not in public at least, but anyway Would your band director cry if some one in your band died unexpectedly? Just curious.

Just from what I see of my band director and how much of his heart and soul is in this band, there is no doubt in my mind that my band director would cry if a student passed away. I haven't ever heard of any band students dying although I am sure that it has happened in the 22 years that my band director has been teaching at my school. It is a very sad thought even.

Huh ... I never thought about that.
Well, no one's ever died in our band (luckily). Percussion BD, along with Mustachioed BD, would shed a number of tears (the number probably depending on the person). Silent Emotionless BD ... considering the rumor (that his diploma slightly confirms), I'm afraid to say. He would cry for sure, but what else he would do I can't say ...

There's a thread similar to this that I started a while back....it's about whether or not you've had to experience death in your band. We had a trombone player die. He was in the same grade as me, someone I had known since forever. He was killed in a car crash in between 7th and 8th grade, and he was only 13. Pretty much everyone cried. We played at the funeral.

I think mine would. He's a really nice guy and puts a lot of effort into the band. His kid is lucky, he's pretty much grown up with the band our director is there so much...lol. Cute kid. OUrs most likely would, although I doubt many kids in my band realize it.
We haven't had someone die in recent years that I know of though.

Yes, about two years ago we had two trumpets in the marching band die, it was very sad, and I know that my band director did cry. He's an extremely compassionate nice guy.

^That's so sad... What happened??
We haven't had a student die, but we have had a couple parents die, and a trombone player's newborn brother die. The only death our BD told us about was the death of 2 girls in my band's mom. She was very active with the band and regularly chaperoned competitions, etc. We played a song at her funeral, but I never saw my BD actually crying. Then again, people handle their grief in different ways...

Lprdgeko: well, I'm not totally sure how it worked, but they were in a jeep with three girls from our color guard going down a canyon and not using the brakes (who knows why, I can't drive anyway) they drove into a tree. One died just because he wasn't wearing a seat belt (driver) and the one in the passenger side was pretty much the airbag for the girls in the color guard (he was trying to protect them) and the girls were okay. It made all of our flutes cry hearing the part about the second one protecting the girls.

Fortunately no one in our band has passed away. I know for sure, my band director would cry if someone in our band died. He has only been here for four years but he is a very compassionate person. He shows his emotions and really cares about the band and everyone in it. I am sorry for you fellow band members who have experienced the loss of someone you know. I played a song in honor band once. In Memorium:Kristina. It was about a french horn player who had died in a car accident. It was the sadest song I have ever heard. You know how directors will read you a short paragraph on what the song is about so you can get the feeling and emotion of the song? Well when our honor band director told us, you could see people crying across the room. But our band director is one of the most caring people I know.
