lessee... there was one male flute in my grade who marched sophomore year but quit after that. he was what you'd call "odd" there's another kid now who's a sophomore in wind ensemble, but he doesn't march. male flautists are almost taboo at my school. guy clarinets are more common. there's usually two or three. the sections that are pretty much male dominated are alto and tenor saxes, trombones, tenor/quad drums, and pit. all the other sections are pretty even except flutes, clarinets, colorguard, and drum majors. all of the sections have at least one person of the opposite sex than the majority in the last four years except the tenors/quads. for some reason it's always all guys. there are girls on snare and bass line. i guess it's just one of those weird traditions or something. i was just thinking that this topic could be extended to male guard which i must say is in some places even more rare than male flautists. some guard are strictly all-female. but then there's cavies and madison scouts.

I'm a male flutist, and I'm first chair flute/picc in our Wind Ensemble. I'm also the drum major and I play tenor sax in Jazz band. I don't get what the sterotype is. An instrument shouldn't be classified by gender. My girlfriend is the first chair trumpet in wind ensemble, lead trumpet in Jazz Band, and soprano section leader in the corps. You don't see any threads about girl trumpet players, do you? The flute didn't become a "girl" instrument until just recently. 40 years ago, professional women flute players were VERY rare. Even still though, the majority of professional flute players are male. I agree with everything you said completely, minus the part about girl trumpet players. I'll have to go with what sfz said: girl trumpet players are incredibly more common than guy flute players. And I do agree, it's unfair that there are gender stereotypes attached to instruments. It's completely unrelated, and completely stupid. I have a friend that was in band for 2 weeks in 5th grade, but quit after those 2 weeks. Why? Because he got made fun of for being a guy and playing flute. But I do understand where sfz is coming from: in some places, people don't even know that guys are capable of playing flute. At school, we've never had any male flute players, which is a shame, because I think our school needs to break out of the habit of thinking that guys just don't play flute. I recall being at some kind of band festival with our band a couple years ago, and we were watching this band that had a guy as first chair flute. Of course, everyone was amazed by this. I wasn't. In my experience outside of school, I can count 7 guys that I've played in a flute section with, without even thinking. I'm sure there's more, but I don't remember them because they're not significant. Because they shouldn't be... they're just like any other girl that would be in the section. On top of those 5, I sat behind a male flute player at Blue Lake while I was there for horn, and had 2 absolutely EXCELLENT flute teachers (Drs. Leonard Garrison and Danillo Mezzadri, whom you may have heard of if you play flute) at Blue Lake. Sooo... guy flute players are cool...?

We have 3. Two are definitely straight and one is asian so its normal for him. Our TUBA section is half female. One is a volleyball player one is a swimmer and one is a straight up bandie. Instrumental stereotypes are ridiculous. I play contrabass clarinet and love every minute of it. Our trumpets have more girls than guys, we have 3 female tbones, horns, clarinets and saxes are prtty even mixes. The only section in the band that's all male is the baritones. And I almost was one so...

Well seriously. They were like "you have a male flute player?" "yeah, he's asian, he's allowed to" "oh that explains everything."

yeah, the majority male flautist i know are asian. speaking of more single-gender sections, string bass is almost always male-dominated. i think i've known a total of 5 girl bass players in my 10 years of orchestra.

Our Mexican male flute player (not the asian) who is actually from Conneticut just made area band. Along with our sophomore girl bassoon player. Who was also first chair in the region. LOL. (ous goes district-region-area-state, for clarification, I know other states have different hierarchies.)

We don't have any male flutes this year, but pretty much all of our clarinets are guys (haha not the first chair clarinets ) but, in a band that's a couple of years below me (fifth graders) we have one male flute, and he's like, the best in their little band! I love male flute players!

I recently attended a concert of my old high school band, and there was a PHENOMENAL male flute player, I'm pretty sure he was the Principal player, absolutely amazing sound, he belongs in a college studio right now, and I think he's only a junior. Very impressive.

It's kind of funny; by my senior year, we had two male flutes: one was by far the tallest in his section (over 6 feet), and the other one was the shortest guy in the section (I'm not sure if he even hit 5'4").
Neither are very good players, but we didn't think too much about it otherwise.

I've known three at my school. One quit this past year, but he was a phenomenal flute player (and stereotyped, for the most part. Hair dyes, feminine, etc.).
We had two this year. Second and third chair. The second chair is going out with the first-chair girl, and the third is a really awesome guy who enjoys all types of music (jazz especially).

We have two guy flute players this year, and they're both, may I say, a little odd. We love them anyway though. They're so fun, and I'm hoping I can get one of them to go out for section leader next year! We have another guy flute, but he's in color guard. TRAITOR. And we had one graduate this year, and he will be severely missed, even though he wasn't that great at flute. =]
