So, I don't know if this goes in here... But I was just curious about male flute players in your bands. Do you have any? I know for me, all through high school I never had any in band with me, and I never really met any, but now that I'm in college, I have three in band with me, two of whom are music/flute majors as well. And is it a big deal if you do? Because here, it's not really at all, but I know if this were high school, having a guy playing the flute would be a huge deal. Which is something I really don't understand, because guys do play the flute. Some of the best flutists in the world are men. So yeah, I was just wondering about your thoughts or comments or whatever. Sorry if there's already a thread for this (I didn't check real well before I posted ) -Sfz

Well, they're not really a big deal for me (considering that there are three in the school now). One's really good, one kinda sucks (but loves band), and the other one also sucks (and has no passion whatsoever for band).
I guess it varies.

We had one in fifth grade. Since then, nada. At conference band, there was a guy who played flute, piccolo, oboe, and English horn, and he was outstanding. From my high school's perspective, it's a rarity to see a guy on flute. At contest once, there was a band with 2 guy flutes and we are all like !!!

We have one guy flute, but he doesn't march and isn't in the same concert band I'm in. So, I don't really know him because he moved here last year.

There's two guy flutes here. One of them stands up to the flute stereotype of being extremely girlie (at least that's the stereotype for male flutes here) The other one hates everyone and smiles all the time. Both of them love band and they rock. I don't see why people give them crap for it though.

Out of the 28 piccolos in my marching band, I'm the only guy. We had another one the year before I joined, but he quit so he could focus on concert ensembles.
I'm a sort of mini-mini-celebrity (in that just about everyone in the band knows who I am) because of it. But beyond that, it's not really a big deal.

^Twenty-eight piccolos? Do you not march flute?
My incredibly masculine, big shot wrestler/baseball player friend played a flute and oboe until his junior year. I NEVER let him forget it.

^ Most college bands have just switched to having picc lines, they are easier to hear and my band has a picc line.
Last year we had about 5 piccolo guys, this year I think we have about 3. We have 7-8 guys in the flute studio so it's not uncommon, they are actually the highest in the studio lol

In high school we had a bassoonist that marched piccolo (he graduated my freshman year) and we had a flutist switch to tuba when he entered high school. In college is a different story, this is the first time in at least 6 years that we have had an all female flute/piccolo section. We have a couple guys in Courtside and I believe 3 in flute studio. The lone male flutist that marches, decided to march tenor sax this year. In community band our best player is an elderly gentleman will play anything you put in front of him (allowing the print it large enough).

hmmm We've always had at least one male flutist in our high school band program, one of them being my cousin. But guys that play flute, in my school at least always tend to be a bit..... odd.

There are three male flute players in my school. One of them is second chair - and he'll be first when the first chair graduates this year. I believe he is the section leader (the first chair is the drum major). He fits the girlie stereotype as well. The other two are both freshman, and I don't know them very well nor have I heard them play.

I've never had a male flutist in band with me. NEVER.
However, I have met two famous male flutists- a jazz flutist and the guy who did the Mario and Inspector Gadget beat box flute thing on You Tube.
I also know that one of the piccolos in the University of Michigan marching band is a guy, because one of my friend's roommates is dating him.

I'm a male flutist, and I'm first chair flute/picc in our Wind Ensemble. I'm also the drum major and I play tenor sax in Jazz band.
I don't get what the sterotype is. An instrument shouldn't be classified by gender.
My girlfriend is the first chair trumpet in wind ensemble, lead trumpet in Jazz Band, and soprano section leader in the corps. You don't see any threads about girl trumpet players, do you?
The flute didn't become a "girl" instrument until just recently. 40 years ago, professional women flute players were VERY rare. Even still though, the majority of professional flute players are male.

You little terd, how did you get to meet Greg Patillo!!!!! ?? *jealous* We have a guy in our flute studio, and he's also in KKPsi with me. He's pretty much awesome, if anyone makes fun of him playing the flute, he's a blackbelt and can kick their bum.

(I'm really bad at reading people's reaction's from what they've typed) But I have to say I completely agree with you on instruments not being classified by gender. It's just stupid. And the reason I didn't start a thread about girl trumpet players, is because at least for me, girl trumpet players are much more common than guy flute players. So that is the reason for that. So yeah, just thought I should comment on that -Sfz
