Hey there, I'm a guy, not gay, and I'm joining my band's winterguard program (which rox beyond sox, but that's for another post). I have been dancing forever (ballet, technique, modern, jazz, lyrical, ballroom), so it's not entirely a new thing. I was just wondering, how many of you have guys in your guard? For those that do, do they seem to have an easier time learning certain things? Rifle, for example; I asked my guard instructor to teach me rifle, and within 3 days I caught my first 5. I don't mean to brag (well, maybe a little bit), I'm just curious as to whether this is common.

YAY FOR WINTERGUARDS WITH GUYS!!! =]
Secondly...We did have a guy on our winterguard this past season, but he plays football so couldn't do field. My freshman year (05-06) there was a guy that...idk what his orientation was, but none of the guard cared. He fit in for the most part, just like everyone else. The football player joined an automatically was on rifle along with flag, and was quite amazing at it, though wasnt the best dancer (but I can't really speak in the dance department...I'm like...gracefully challenged) The other guy was on flag with me and other noobies. And he was good at dance. I really hope to get more guys though, its great to have them. =]

we had a guy the past four years (just graduated last june). he was pretty good on flag, ok on rifle, and mediocre on sabre. as far as dance goes, we decided he was more like the bowl rather than the jello. guys do tend to be better on rifle, but i think, like girls, it just depends on how much time you put into it. Secondly...We did have a guy on our winterguard this past season, but he plays football so couldn't do field. how in the world did you ever get a football player to join guard? if the football players at my school joined they'd automatically have their orientation questioned, not that all the guys who've ever done guard at my school were gay or bi.

Yeah, I hate that guys who dance are automatically assumed gay... it's a dumb stereotype both ways.

Gues aren't allowed in our colorgaurd.... which I think is a shame, because just because they can't wear the pink sparkly outfits, doens't mean they can't be more graceful, dance as well, and execute moves better than the chicks that try to. We don't have rifles or sabres or anything but flags, but I still think it's unfair. I know of at least two guys that want to, and i know they'd be great at it. Good for you, I love seeing male guard members. They're so much more entertaining, because they're often as good or better than the girls.

At my school, last year was the first year that we had guys in guard. They're always put on rifle, and they're good at it. Nobody questions their orientation, because whether you're wearing the wool uniform and carrying a sousa or the floaty skin-tight costume and holding a flag, you're there for fun, not as an expression of some inner idea.
I see no reason why guys should be excluded from guard as long as they've got some measure of talent and a willingness to work hard.

Thanks. The only task my band has now is recruiting more guys. Last year, one of the guys in guard graduated, so his "replacement" guy was his younger brother. We need to expand beyond two families of guys...

We have a guy in guard: the first in our school's fifty-year existence.
Typically, guys are more aggressive than most girls. Most guys in colorguard I've watched have a bit more edge than the girls. I'm almost certain it's not just a physical thing but a mental thing too. There are certain things I am aware that are in a girl's mind...I'm just very familiar with the territory.

We had a guy my freshman and sophomore year.
and rifle is definitely something that guys catch onto quickly. I'm not surprised.
In general, guys have more trouble with sabre and dance, but with your background, I'm sure that won't be a problem.
Good luck.

Ok, We have wanted a Man-flag (what we call guy guards) on our team. But i believe they dont try out because of the whole...gay thing that you said earlier. We personally want a Man-flag so we can get out of our stupid retro-cheerleader outfits. But I see nothing wrong with being a man-flag. If a school can have Guylites why cant they have Man-flags? I cant catch a rifle to save my life, only tried it once, hit myself in the head...never doing it again...so good job!

Wow! congrats on your 5... I caught one a few weeks ago, and haven't caught it since. We had a guy last year, he was gay, but he was great with a rifle and on the dances. Everyone went to him when they needed help. He seemed to get it all really fast!

Our colorguard director doesn't allow guys to join, but that is because our guard is always very large (36-39 girls), and to have one or two join would waste a lot of money. Apparently male colorguard uniforms, like all guard uniforms, can only be bought in group quantities, not just one or two. That's probably not the main reason, though. There's a clarinetist who wants to join next year; he's been taking a sabre home and is actually quite good at spinning. Hopefully he can join.

man, I wish we had sabres... we'll probably have them in a year or two, but we just sold all ours (along with our banana rifles) and so all we have is rifles and flags. I don't think the uniforms will be an issue, as we have a band parent who works a clothing shop and she does/arranges the doing of all our uniforms, silks, etc. Our first spin camp (aka basics session, I'm not sure if that's a common name for them) is this sunday, I'm excited. And I might be able to trade in my second-worst-rifle-on-inventory for a slightly better one that doesn't threaten to shatter when dropped despite the 3 pounds of tape I've got on it... lol.

I really makes me mad how people are so quick to assume that guys in guard are gay. *grumbles on and on*
