Do any of your schools have a chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band service fraternity? I'm currently a prospective member, and am curious if there are any brothers or fellow PMs out there.

We do! Mississippi State is actually the Epsilon chapter and we have a looong history of stories too. We had some problems with state laws against fraternities, so we've disbanded a few times and then gotten back together. I crossed last semester as a member of our Sigma class. I'm excited b/c I'm going to the Southeast district convention in two weeks!
I'm not sure how the Theta Upsilon chapter (I believe that's URI's) does their pm instruction, but if you need interviews from other brothers and would like to get some from a different chapter, message me and I'll fill one out for you!

University of Florida Alpha Eta Chapter F97- HNX
District conventions are a blast. My KKPsi brothers are about the only people from college I keep in touch with.

Towson University does. Which is in Maryland. But I'm starting there in the fall as a freshmen and I don't know much about it yet other than that you can join after your first semester. Which I plan to do.

We have it at Ashland University, which, I am not too familiar with, except that I hope that I will get a bid in (Nov-Dec ppl find out if they have a spot). See, there are mostly girls in the chapter at AU. But, I was invited by their organization last school year to do the Ashland Marching Band Preview Day, and I have also been in contact with the President of the KKY at AU.

BGSU has a KKPsi chapter, as well as a TBS one (tau beta sigma). BG is thick with greek, and has a large amount of music majors, so actually there are four (yes, FOUR) music fraternities/sororities. KKPsi is mostly guys, and it's the "band" fraternity. Its sister is TBS. Then there are the more "professional" groups, Phi Mu Alpha (guys) and Sigma Alpha Iota (girls).
And yet I haven't had the urge to join a single one. XD

You've mentioned the "Fab Four". However, one important thing to note is that KKPsi and TBS are both co-ed. Also they aren't social greek organizations, they are service fraternities.

What exactly do you have to do to be part of these sororities? I know you go to a "rush" but what is it, and do you really have to do the "pledge" thing where you have to like be people's footstolls or kidnap people? I want to know this before I apply for Sigma Alpha...

I want to know this before I apply for Sigma Alpha... It depends on the school and its chapter. Probably the best thing to do is to ask someone that you trust what the initiation process is like. Most schools have strict policies on hazing.

I heard you have to have at least one music credit, meaning we can't rush until the Spring. It may be different at FSU, but that's what I have been told.

Brassdancer, I think what you said is right. I was in Mu Phi Epsilon and had the same requirement. You have to be a 2nd semester freshman to pledge. Anyone meeting that criteria was most welcome. I appreciated that MPE had a small Christian influence in its history, and that was a big deal in making my decision between MPE and SAI.
At UT, we had a KKY and a TBS chapter. I was in the TBS chapter (Beta Gamma, woo!). You have to be invited to join there. There isn't just a sign-up sheet, which I have a strong opinion about, but this isn't the place for that.
All membership candidates (MCs) rushing any music or band fraternity should expect to make a weekly commitment to attend pledge class and to learn their pledge knowledge. Most places have strict policies about hazing, but I also know that a good bit of it goes on, depending on the organization and where you are. I know that PMA guys at our school were hazed ridiculously. My friends hated being pledges, but wanted PMA on their resumes badly enough to put up with it.
My pledge experiences were all really positive ones. No hazing by any means. The girls in both groups really wanted the experience to be a really memorable and good one, and they really did make it a special time.
