Okay, so recently I was thinking about our show this year, and how strange some parts are, that I felt it absolutely necessary to share it with everybody, and to ask to hear what weird stuff has been incorporated into your shows, just because it amuses me to read things like that...and, of course, to write them. SO, this year, the Granada Hills Highlander Marching Band had some weird stuff going on... - we had a girl in dance guard who is about 4'9" (I'm not even kidding) play Indiana and prance about the field in a HUGE hat that our BD lent her...
- we have like four counts in production where we dance about wildly to get to our next spot, and everyone like, totally MOLESTS their horns...
- and last, but good lord not least, our drum major strips...NO JOKE. He throws off his kilt to reveal an indiana jones costume...OMG it'd HILARIOUS.

the giant flag!!!
A few years ago we had a giant flag that flew over the whole band. One football game it literally took out half of the band (the taller poeople) and there were shakos layign all over the field.

Well, we have backdrops that kinda look like poptarts... and a bouncing visual. That was kinda awkward at times. Hehe.

I call those moments "what the? moments". I have pictures of most of them. Let's start with 2002. (I wasn't in the band at the time. I was in 8th grade.) The theme was First Flight. - www.ramband.com/Images/Photo%20Albums/USSBA%20Champ/images/SH-USChmp%20081_jpg.jpg- www.ramband.com/Images/Photo%20Albums/USSBA%20Champ/pages/SH-USChmp%20119_jpg.htmIn 2003, my freshman year, the theme was Dance Portraits. The band did a "dance," and at the beginning there were these gigantic panels that the band was behind. It was really cool. - www.ramband.com/PhotoAlbums/2003miscpix/pages/63-2003%20Ram%20Band-Giants%20Stadium%2010-04_JPG.htmIn 2004 the theme was The Storm. We, too, had a giant flag that covered us. - www.ramband.com/PhotoAlbums/MIM04/pages/P1010150_JPG.htm- www.ramband.com/PhotoAlbums/MIM04/pages/P1010151_JPG.htm- www.ramband.com/PhotoAlbums/MIM04/pages/P1010152_JPG.htmAlso, we had some weird stuff going on at the beginning. - www.ramband.com/PhotoAlbums/MIM04/pages/P1010116_JPG.htm- www.ramband.com/PhotoAlbums/MIM04/pages/P1010117_JPG.htm (^I'm the farthest one to the right in that circle.) And this year (Dimensions of Time), we had the "wind down" at the end. We all had to do a "tick-tock" type thing, and then kind of fall down and go limp. I could only find one picture of it, and it's kind of dark. - www.ramband.com/images/ramband/images/chsmrb05-1.jpg^You can see the giant metronome we had in the back, too.

Does doing the "Fight Club" visual during a homemade drum break inserted into "Prologue/Murder, Murder" out of the Jekyll and Hyde show count as weird?
The BD always told me to tone it down because it was easier than getting 120 other people to lunge out like they meant it like me. Hardcore! Woo!

We spell out "NA" with a big circle during "hey Jude" while we sing "na, na, na . . . Hey Jude!" Danced in place for 8 counts, on the drill sheet it said "Dance in place for 8 counts - ham it up" and 2 scatters!

Oh My God, we saw you guys!!! That was SO COOL! I'm from the Mira Costa Marching Mustangs. We were one of the 3A bands at Moorpark, so you probably didn't see our show. Our ENTIRE band loved your show. IT was so cool. The whole drum major turning into Indiana Jones was the best part. We LOVED it!

OMG, in my 9 years that I've seen concerts at this school district I've never seen these:
.. Some junior high percussionist broke her thumb yesterday and couldn't play her part on the snare tonight.. so the BD had to play it and the ride symbal from the back of the band with the kids.. it was funny.
.. The HS band tonight had a Santa come out and hand out candy canes while playing Sleigh Ride...

Let's see... -We wore masks the entire show. You know how they say to use periferal vision... can't. view is blocked. -At the end of one song, we presented a rose to "the crowd" even though we were told to point it in the direction of the Dm. - Our dance line put on wierd looking masks and did the "Masquerade dance routein" - We have a gigantic mirror through which or Dm "disappeared" through. As she went through the mirror, the 30 foot flag with a mask painted on it unraveled and hid her. That's about it.

oh lets see... two years ago (our 03 show) we had the guard disappear under clear tarps. that same year we had our guard leader scream (the show was called clastropoibia. "the walls are closing in. i cannot breath. somebody get me out of here. Let me out [scream][bands starts playing]") but she sucked at it, so the wind players around her had to scream too.
this year there were some wierd plume moves, and the flutes had to sway during thier section solo. also, we had a duet just wander around the field.

this year our guard used rifles and sabers and our guard captain threw the rifle in the air during practice and it hit her lip and it busted open and we do this head chop routine in our drum solo (see pic) and one of the girls got of count and didn't duck fast enough for the head chop and she ended up getting hit in the head by a flag.
