We played the Nutcracker Suite in Community band and the oboe player played the English horn for one of the movements.
When we did pachelbels canon for flute chamber one of the guys on the drum like played double bass to accompany us.

This year some of our concert band music requires an English horn, Eb clarinet and contrabass clarinet, the latter of which is surprisingly big.

Those aren't TOO rare. XD
I'd love to see a bass saxophone... or a contrabass flute (I think that's what they're called but they are HUGE... for a flute. XD) Also I'd like to see a sarrusophone. (I'm hoping I spelled that right.)

Also lots of PMEA festivals have Eb soprano clarinet players. Ah, how could I forget? We have an Eb soprano clarinet player in Wind Ensemble who sometimes doubles for our oboist, who is just a beginner. It's a really cute little clarinet! Ow oh the humanity! An Eb Clarinet/Beginning Oboe Player. that's like begging to be sharp all the time We had all kinds of fun instruments at my school. We had a soprano sax, several bassoons, I was the English horn/oboe player, alto and contralto clarinets, contra bass clarinet, bass trombones, flugelhorns, mellophones, it was great. Keep in mind these were never all played at the same time lol. Some were marching exclusive and my BD refused to touch the alto clarinets

violas definitly don't qualify as rare... thats (almost) like calling clarinets or trumpets rare.

its not that bad. Strings exist in clumps, and violas are the least known, and hardest to recognize. I cant really tell the difference between violas and violins. But i have never looked at them closely.

This wouldn't be rare but at a competition I saw a Trumpet soloist who had one of those Fanfare Trumpets.

Our BD takes his pocket trumpet out all the time. It's hilarious to see the freshmen's faces. Sort of a, "OMG! What is that?" look. His is very similar to this, with the black lacquer and gold valves/slides. It's such a cute lil' thing, and yet it has such a bright sound. www.studentinstruments.com.au/images/cpt-250BKheadpic.jpg

My old band director in my sophomore year had a piccolo trumpet, he played in River City Brass, and I remember him playing Sleigh Ride on it a few times.

Oboes are only semi-rare, but how 'bout 9 oboes in the same ensemble? I went to an honor band a few years ago, with 2 different bands. Each had 4 or 5 oboes. Then we divided into brass, percussion, and woodwind ensembles. 9 oboes is nuts, but sounds pretty cool when they have a soli.
