So, our band usually practices on a perfect artificial turf and we're pretty used to the immaculate condition of it. Today we went to a our first competition and we were all hyped up and excited... until we saw the field.
Absolutely dreadful. It was a GRASS field, with all sorts of potholes and such. There was one part of the field that DIDN'T have any grass, just dirt. Also, we could hardly see the yardlines and yard numbers, which made our drill overall, a whole lot harder.
Has a similar situation happened to anyone else (i.e., getting used to practicing on one type of field, then marching at a show where the field is different)?

We almost always practice on a parking lot. Hardly ever on a field. Only on Saturdays before a game or comp, and then only sometimes, what with this being the third rainy Saturday in a row.
Last year it had rained all day but we still had the comp. The grass field was like a big thing of jello....they had to move the marker s down because the 50 was on big mud pit....this was the same competition where we broke 90 and ran over a judge.
Wait this is your FIRST comp? Our last comp is tomorrow!

I love grass fields. They're SO much easier to march on than turf. Especially when it lightly drizzles, and then the whole turf becomes a giant slip and slide. Grass, IMO, is better to practiec on than turf. And better than grass is pavement. We always march on a blacktop parking lot during camp. And yeah... isn't a little late to be JUST having your first competition? Mid states is next saturday fo us. D:
And also, Bluescalesdragon, we did the 47 ronin last year also. Thats been my fave shoe for us so far. ^_^

Yes, haha. This is our first. Well, actually, our first 'real' competition. We've just been doing exhibition lately.
When did your season start?

Wow, August? We started school in August. XD
Yeah, we've been trying to clean up and finish our show (which we have). From now on, it's just a whole bunch of cleaning and stuff.

Only on thursday?? Thats dangerous lol. We have a marching band period for school (42 minutes), and we practice Mondays-Thursdays from 2:45 to 5:00. We die during the beggining of the school year. XD We also practice on our grass field i mentioned, which is the equivilent of a street after a jet plane crashed into it. XD

my freshman and sophomore year of hs, we practiced on an an old-school turf field (the kind that's bright green without the little rubber bits) and our stadium was grass. most of our competitions were on grass as well. my junior year, they installed brand new turf fields (the ones that are more like real grass and have the rubber bits). we practiced on one and then there was one in the stadium. in college band, we practice on a really crappy asphalt field that is apparently sinking because it's built on top of an 1950's landfill and they didn't even build the field right. our stadium is turf though, so it throws us off sometimes because we have dots every four steps on the yard lines on our practice field, but obviously we can't spray paint the expensive turf. also, the numbers on the field are different sizes and the practice field doesn't have a giant jayhawk in the middle of it. honestly, i'm not picky about the surface i march on. you can't control how another school maintains it's field, so you just have to do your best with what you have.

We practice on grass. Yesterday, we had a competition on turf, Now, turf is very squishy which makes marching a whole lot harder.

We practice on turf, unless football players on the turf, then we use a grass practice field. Apparently all our shows this year our on artificial turf fields.
For me, it's ironic because I've allergic to both grass and certain chemicals in turf. I prefer grass, because I'm less allergic to it.

We practice on a really nice turf field. However, marching on the actual football field, which, between the U2 concert there a few weeks back, and the heavy rainfall, has proven somewhat more difficult.
