Is there an inspiration or reason behind why you do music or play a specific instrument?

i played Bari. because after i decided marching band wasn't for me my SL/DM/Big Brother/Senior/Dictator/Thing came up to me (while i was still a trumpet) my freshman year and when asked why should i join low brass he looked me staight in the eye and said with the most serious face....."Because [Insert Name Here] Low Brass has more fun" and with that i had one of the best times of my life it's because of him that i came to love band
As for Tuba that's a different story

I played trumpet because my cousin played it, and I thought he was so cool.
I stopped letting others pick instruments for me after that, and so far with the bassoon it's gone really well. XD

I picked trumpet to do something other than my brothers, who played violin and viola.
Actually, I was going to quit once I got into high school, but my friend made me join marching band with her, and my section was fantastic. They were some of the coolest people ever and they've just improved my life so much.
As for playing cymbals, my friend in the trumpet section basically told me to and as I was kind of scared of him still I did. Totally worth it.

Well there is really nothing behind me joining...but I am sure glad it did. But my story is kind of like keyslinger. It was my rookie year of marching band and I saw how amazing things were when I played clarinet. I loved it more than anything. Then I think it was just because that is what I always played. But then I realized how connected I became with it. It went everywhere with me. I dont know. That is my story.

I knew I wanted to play trombone when I saw my uncle play when I was just a wee little kiddo. I knew I wanted to do jazz when I went through my dad's old LP's and listened to Tommy Dorsey. I knew I wanted to be in marching band in grade school when the local high school used to come over and perform for us.
I have way more inspirations, but those are the direct, straight-forward ones.

when i was in kindergarten, i saw this lady playing flute, and i thougnt it was pretty cool. then when i joined band, i was having a hard time getting any sound out of ithe flute. so i decided to do clarinet instead...i can't remember why...it probably had something to do with: - my director played clarinet - one of my friends (who is now my loving dictator section leader) played clarinet - i could switch to saxophone the year after

I wanted to join band because my best friend was doing it. I chose clarinet because my dad did when we was little. I joined marching band because I had to if I was going to do band.

I switched to band because I didn't really have any fun playing strings in elementary school. I chose percussion because it was quite different from all the other sections. I played in marching band because I thought it would be interesting and because it's what we do for almost all of first semester in band class (and you have to be signed up for first semester in order to audition for the upper band). I chose to stay in pit all four years because mallet percussion was my specialty, and because I felt I had to help the underclassmen who were going to be in pit anyways, since most of them had pretty sketchy keyboard mallet experience, particularly at reading music.

Neither of my parents were in band. In 5th grade the Middle School BD came one day to take names for people interested in joining band. If we were interested, he said to write down an instrument we wanted to play, and one more just in case there were too many of the first one. I wrote down clarinet because it looked like a recorder lol. And the rest is history.

I remember way back in... 2nd grade I believe, Fantasia 2000 came out. I watched it because of all the good reviews and also the heavy musical history in my family (my brother played violin and my sister played flute. My grandpa was a band leader in Vietnam). I remember sitting in the theater hearing "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin and thought the opening gliss was AMAZING. I immediately turned to my dad and asked, "What instrument was THAT?!" And he responded clarinet. ;D Been playing since 5th grade, where I ALMOST switched to oboe. I joined marching band because: 1), my sister did it for 2 years and I wanted to do it for all 4 years. 2), to prove to my sister marching band is not a cult (haha, yeah right. xD). 3), I wanted to have more friends in high school. 4), I wanted challenging music, because I was bored outta my mind in middle school.

I was sitting in my 5th grade classroom and the counselors from the middle school came in and had us register for classes for 6th grade. I put band down. I don't really even know why...but I'm glad I did.
Originally I (like everybody else) wanted to play trumpet. So the band director pulled me into his office and had me play a trumpet. I couldn't buzz. So then he asked me what else I was interested in. I said trombone, so he hands me his. I could buzz, but I couldn't reach 7th position. So then he handed me a tuba. That didn't work either. So then he hands me this weird looking beast, and I could play it. I asked him what it was and he said it was a baritone. I had NO idea what a baritone even was. But I immediately loved it and I've played it ever since.

I knew I was going to marching band throughout high school before I even saw what my band room looked like. I knew in middle school that I could never be a true band geek (as I aspired to be) if I was not in marching band.
Also, if I remember correctly, I read the comics on this site quite frequently as a middle schooler. They always made marching band look fun.

I didn't really have an inspiration to join band. I joined in 6th grade where my only choices were to join band, choir, theatre or take a foreign language. I can't sing, I have a mild case of performance anxiety when it comes to speaking on stage, and I fail at Spanish/French. So band was the only thing left. Flute was what came naturally to me. I can't do reeds, and I didn't want to play something too loud. I stayed in band cause it kept me out of trouble, and gave me something to give focus to my life.
