Hello underclassmen. Soon to be Senior here. I figured I would do for you as I have done for some of my younger cousins and two little brothers. I'm here to give you tips and such for High School, and I hope other upcoming seniors/soon to be graduates/college students will add their tips as well.
1. Don't take any "0" grades. Even if you'll only get a 30, it's better than a "0"
2. Don't wait forever to take your SATs. The earlier, the better.
3. Take the PSAT- it helps.
4. Don't take a bunch of "blow off classes" your Senior year. Instead of a boring class for an easy grade, take something impressive.
5. If your school has an opportunity to graduate with something more, such as being a Vet Assistant 1 or having Medical experience- take it. My best friend wants to be a dentist, but she's getting the Vet Assistant 1 so she can work her way through college as a vet.
6. LOOK for scholarships. There are a lot out there each year that go unclaimed because nobody applied for them. Even if it's a minority scholarship, apply anyways. If a minority student does not apply for the scholarship and you did, you can get the scholarship.
Anyways, that's all I have for now- I'm in the middle of English Class on a laptop

Don't say "I cant get through high school, its too hard."
Really, I look back at high school and look at what a cakewalk it COULD have been. I didn't care, really, because I thought I didn't need good grades because I was goin to IUP (which is a school I was guaranteed to get into, pretty much) But really ... strive for the good grades, impress your teachers, and better yet, when you find that teacher that really helps you, TELL THEM. I still tell my teachers what an impact they've left on me when I go visit my HS, and I'm a junior in college!
Also, for future music ed majors ... you DONT need to know how to play every instrument. Take my advice, if you like learning instruments, pick up 2 or 3 that wont effect your main instrument embouchure (or you will make the changes so it wont), and it will feed the bug. Youll get to take lots of tech classes in college, which are really fun and almost like middle school band only YOU are the middle schooler. I personally play euph, and learned (well I had previously played clarinet so I kept it up), trumpet and saxophone. It fed my need to learn, and kinda kept my mind focused on my main instrument.

Is anyone here actually a freshman of 12? I am!!!!
And there is not really any bullying at all in our school. People got suspended for putting F's on freshmen hands on freshman friday. So yeah.
And stupid freshman is a band freshman term we use to make fun of ourselves. Yeah. My school rocks.
I seriously think I am the first class of 12 to post here...

^ Bahaha the first thing I saw when I saw your name under "Freshmen '12" in the most-recently posted thread on the main board (that makes sense in my head) is that they created a new topic for us who are graduating from college in 2012.
On a different note, my horn quartet is named "The 2012"... and our professor was introducing us to all the band directors before we played a presentation at All State. He said we're "The 2012" for now, but it might have to change to "The 2013" or "The 2014" (etc). I think they laughed because they understood.

Am I the only one who's school doesn't seem to have an issue with senior bullying? I mean, yeah, there's plenty of bullying and fights. But I have never once seen it limited to just an upperclassman picking on a freshman. Maybe it's because I come from a small school; we have about 400-500 right now....It just has never seemed to be a problem to me. In fact, the only time I have ever seem someone discriminated against because of age was by teachers. I've had many who have admitted to treating younger kids differently because they think they're less mature, especially in Jr. High. We had a teacher once (Who I hated as a 6th grader but then LOVED as an 8th grader, go figure. But she was a great teacher) who, when she had bus duty, would let 8th graders sit however they wanted in the gym but 6th and 7th graders had to line up and sit bunched up in rows...And man, the art teacher at my school loathes freshman. She's kinda weird though.
Anyways, rant over.

^ Yeah I never really saw it at my school. I mean, we had gang-related fights, but not like a bully-bully fight. And we were a school of like 2200.

Freshman FTW!!!! Anyhoo, we never had that big of a problem with upperclassmen bullying Freshman. There's only a few people who do, and not very regularly. Our band is kinda small compared to some bands I've seen, composed of 73 people total, so we're really close-knit.

Freshmen '12 here. ^_^ I have been mistaken for a upperclassmen, she was just like "wait..your a freshmen? I thought you were older.." So, that's one plus. My upperclassmen in band don't really make fun of us, we only got teased with the nickname "freshmeat" Our school isnt the bullying type. Sure, fights happened, but there is no bullying.

In general freshman need to give up their retarded middle school fads. I was one of the few people who didn't have trouble when I came wearing pants that didn't cut off circulation

I'm going to be a sophomore next year. Huzzah for class of 2012! lol Next year is a big deal, because freshmen and sophomores are moving up to the high school. For a long time our HS was 10-12 grades. Now it's going to be a regular 9-12. This is good because our band will be bigger. This is bad because it means that Mini Band Camp (Our FIRST band camp.) will be twice as big, thus less individual time for BDs to work with the kids. We (our advanced 9th grade band) were invited to play a few games with the "Big Band". At least, that's what we thought we were going to be doing. They forgot to mention that we would be marching too. It was a disaster. They literally threw us on the feild and yelled for us to 'follow the other kids' as we went out onto the field. Rofl
