I've been considering what I hear about DMA, and I'm curious as to what actually goes on...what do you learn, what do they teach you? I know some of the stupider activities they have, but that's it...

I went to DMA four years ago, so it might have changed a bit, but a lot of what they teach you is HOW to lead a band. There's some directing technique, commanding technique, etc. But they're more giving you the know-how on how to feel comfortable and command your band. I know I gained a lot of confidence regarding my position there and I was much more comfortable with leading the band when I came back. It's a great experience and I highly recommend it for ANY drum majors.

I just got back from the one at ASU, and I definitely think it's worth the trip. Two major things they teach is how to confidently lead the band (if you're new to the whole idea) and also how to properly conduct. The conducting critique helped me a lot.

I ended up going to Summer Marching Academy and not DMA. Pretty much the same thing though. We had Richard Saucedo and whole bunch of guys like that work with us. We also had the chance to work with the Academy Drum & Bugle Corps! They took 3 days off their rehearsal time to work with us, and they go on tour for the start of the season next week! On the last night, the Academy and then all the instrumentalists of the camp totalled at 300 PEOPLE playing in an auditorium. It was PURE EPIC. Words can't even describe. All the DM's, we were in the front rows watching the Academy DM and conducting with him. Amazing experience...

DMA was incredible. Words can not describe the week I had. I had more fun than I have in a long time. I made so many new friends, learned a lot, got stuck in an elevator, in the same room where tiles fell all over the place, while we were playing ping pong with jazz club, stood tall and strong with 80 other people and sang and conducted the banner in the rain and hail and pretty much anything else you can think of. It was great. Usually when it storms, people run. No, we stood proud and strong and showed people what the academy is about and what being drum major is about. Stared thought...you will not be remembered for the good things you will do, but how you handle the bad things.
I will miss it so much, but now I have a kob to do. I am now ready to be the drum major for the Western Brown High School Marching Band.

Not really. I think mine was around 150. But the band boosters paid for me to go. I dont even think it was 150.

DMA is awesome. Do it. Or, if they offer a marching band camp or leadership camp, do that! I did the marching band one, and I'm going to do the leadership one at West Chester U. It's so fun.

Where can I find information on DMA? I've got a friend who is taking over drum major next year and I told her I'd try to find some info on camps she could try and go to, but I need information like where the nearest one would be (we're around Madison, WI) and what dates it goes on. Thanks!

In response to carlaxbassoon's question, yes, it's rather expensive. I paid for the camp on my own, and as a resident, it cost me $440. Pricey, but definitely worth the money.
Arizona was freaking hot, but the "ENtense" energy and enthusiasm of the whole group makes every obstacle seem trivial in the face of what we need to accomplish.
