If your drum major tryout doesn't involve playing, then your band "rank" shouldn't make much difference... optimally, your skill at being drum major will be what makes or breaks it for you. Good luck!

We had our top percussionist, a middle band clarinet, and our top saxaphone make drum major.
I don't think that band rank should matter.

but sadly, it does matter. To the directors at least

It just depends on how your directors weight playing ability, but I personally feel like musicianship is a very key area of functioning as drum major. Considering a DM is conducting and leading a group that is performing music, it makes sense that being very comfortable with music in general would make things a lot easier. With that said, you needn't be the best at your instrument. What counts is that you maintain a respectable level of proficiency. For your program, that may not necessarily mean being in top band. Ultimately, you can't really know until you go for it! Best of luck!

No i wouldn't say that. your success depends on how much everyone respects you.
