My directors are really cool. They all have really good senses of humor, but when we have jobs to do, they command the utmost respect. Even if some people pretend the directors don't.

Yep yep. My director wants respect when a job needs to be done, but he messes around with us in a way that some people dont give him the respect he deserves. We are getting there but yea....I really love my dierctor. Not that kind of love, a kind of love where I trust him with my life and I know he will never do anything to hurt me. lol

First, Rent and Wicked are amazing! lol.
Then, here is what I would I would do. I would work my hardest to prove them wrong. We all know they are a bunch of jerks. Show them what you are made of.

I love my BDs. Some people don't like our main band director, but I don't know anyone who doesn't like our assistant BD. Our main BD can play favorites from time to time, which is why a lot of people don't like him... ...but our assistant BD has done a lot for us. One story that I just heard yesterday was one of our flute players wanted to get a professional flute, and her parents thought they'd be paying about $200-500, but later realized that a professional flute can be twice as much. Our assistant BD, after hearing the story, said, "I'll find you one". And he did. A $1000 flute for $200. In New Jersey. (We're in Colorado.) Our BDs do so much for our band program. At this point, they've hired a drill writer who writes for the Blue Devils (or was it the Blue Knights?) and a music transposer for drum corps also... not to mention the amazing music we've played during concert season over the years: 2006: Overture to Candide Elegy for a Young American Contre Qui Rose Tempered Steel 2007: (CMEA) Florentiner March Mother Earth Fanfare Be Thou My Vision (Gillingham) Sea Songs Around the World Amazing Grace (Wilheim I think) (Concert) Red Rocks Fanfare Colonial Song Song for Lyndsay Radiant Joy 2008: The "Gum-Suckers" March Fanfare (Wataru Hokoyama) Hold This Boy and Listen KHAN I love our BDs. I'm going to cry when I graduate.

lol. thats great. i cant really describe mine in words. first of all, i love vesuvius and then your shadows of rememberance show sounds really cool.
well yesterday there was a lunch in. it is at the ge testing facility and they give schools grants every year. well our band got a grant and they invited a teacher and student from that school. it was me and my band director. he is a cool guy but it was interesting. i walk out of the middle of school and get in is car. a few times i thought i might die beacsue he is a bad driver. well, he is not bad, he is just careless. well it is about an hour drive and we listen to band music and we talk about things. it was kind of nice to see what he thought of things and his opinion. we get there and it is like this top secret thing. it is the middle of no where and it was pretty cool. we get in the place we are supossed to be and we get greted with hand shakes. there is probably a good tewnty people there and then one at a time we had to stand up and introduce ourselves. after i introduced myself...told them who i was, what i was here for, school...all that good stuff. other people were talking and they were like giving their life stories. lol. i didnt know they wanted to know eerything about me. lol. well i had the best meal in a ling time. it was home cooked and incredible. well after it is time to leave, we go out and get our oicture taken with a big check and yea. we leave and we got back to school early. so instead of going back to school, we just went out and got ice cream and our coffee shop. lol. it was fun. we were the only ones in there besides the people working. but i really got the chance to see how he thought and what he thought about different things. we learned a lot about each other. i had a blast. i wish i could do it more often.

I spend a lot of my time after track practice just hanging out with my BD, helping him with whatever he's doing, and hearing his stream of consciousness about whatever he is thinking about. The fact that he was willing to do that with you shows (I like to think) a lot of trust and that you're a big part of his band and all that.
I personally find it to be the mark of a good director that he doesn't hide his thoughts from his band. In most ensembles, the director controls a good chunk of his students' lives in his own right, and if he isn't willing to give them a say in what he does with it, I think that's a problem.

Glad your lunch thing went well, hansel!
we played candide this year but we didn't really continue it because it was too advanced for most of the band.

My BD is pretty cool. He can be VERY stern/strict when needed, and he can also be really nice and fun. Last night we had our band banquet and there was a ping pong table and a pool table there. He and our Asst. BD were playing ping pong (and it was epic) and other people were playing pool. After they were done, me, my brother, and a trumpet wanted to play, and I needed a partner so my BD said he would play. He's good at pool too lol (we won). But yeah, he would help me and a trumpet player by giving us tips on the correct way to hold the cue and stuff like that. It was fun.
