I think plumes look kinda silly. But secretly... I'm a little jealous. I think that's like the recognized signs of bands are the little feather dusters and shiny uniforms. Our band doesn't have those types of uniforms. We have like red poncho/jacket/ type things. I can't explain them really. And they have white Indian fringe and other Indian decorations on them. And we don't have hats... not plumes, etc. We have Head Dresses. The look really awesome. Almost exactly like this: www.crafts-gifts.com/indian/headdress.jpgOur drum majors have these really awesome head dresses that go like all the way down their backs. So... strange/silly/unusual uniforms. Anyone else have them? (We are the Indians, by the way, which is why our uniforms look different. Being an Indian is fun. Our Cheerleaders always make signs talking about how we're going to "Scalp the [other team's mascot]") [If this is in the wrong section, forgive me. I'm new.]

Hmm can't say I've ever seen any non-traditional uniforms. Ours were: Relatively plain in the marching band world, I think. Does your band do a lot of competing?

Well, it won't officially be my band until next year...or this summer at band camp. I'm not sure how much competing the HS has done. My sister went to a few out of state things when she was in our HS band. When someone says marching band uniform, I think bedazzled suits and sashes and plumes. Us? Not so much. We're the Indians... so we have Indian style uniforms. A little strange I guess. I just love our head dresses.

You definitely need to score a picture of these Indian unis. I want to see them. Ours are pretty average, styled kind of the same way as the Blue Devils uniforms. Except ours are gold where that is silver, and black where theirs is blue. And the vest isn't sparkly.

We have really normal uniforms... The only odd thing about them is the fact that in our band logo on the dm uniforms, there is a black treble clef on a black background ( ) But there is this town nearby us that we play at football games that was an important town in the revolutionary war, so they are dressed up as though they are in the revolutionary war, with the hats and everything... I forget their mascot, it was something like colonists or revolutionaries or something. EDIT: they are the colonials, i think...

Your school's mascot is an astronaut? That's new. XD Our mascot is the Indian, so the band has the indian style uniform and one of our cheerleaders becomes the actual mascot (with an Indian style beaded dress, that looks like deerskin. And braided hair with a feather stuck in). She looks like Pocahontas. At the high school they call the pep rallys, "Pow Wows". And all the typical pep songs, like "Land of a Thousand Dances" or "On the War Path" make a lot more sense for us. (Assuming everyone else does those too.) But yeah... I can't wait to get my Head Dress. And we don't have those little chin strap things on them either. It's great.

my hs band uniforms are these: pretty average looking Fred J. Miller. here's a close-up of the same but green instead of red. we also got new white sashes and gauntlets instead of the silver. can't find any good pictures of KU, but their uniforms have interchangeable capes, sashes, etc. the drum major hats are big, white, buckingham palace guard hats with red and blue plumes. the marchers have regular black shakos.

I'd love to have a uniform that sort of matched our mascot. I wouldn't mind that either, except that our mascot (he's actually more of a "symbol") is "hostile and abusive", you can see a picture in my profile. As a matter of fact, I'm surprised that you're allowed to have that uniform. Hasn't anyone pulled that "racist" card on you guys yet? But I digress. I promised myself I wasn't going to hijack a thread. Back to strange uniforms... OUR NEW UNIFORMS! They are a fusion of our current uniform (purchased in 1979 and just now getting replaced, 30 years of gameday sweat soaked into a 20 ton wool jacket) and the original Illinois Military Band uniform from the early 1900's. Here's a picture of the prototype, the "I" is no longer in the design. If the picture link doesn't work, try the video to see our uniform in "epic mode". www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=30383952&op=1&o=all&view=all&subj=2204818373&aid=-1&oid=2204818373&id=1146750126www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvpSHlRon2M

I'm surprised too. Not that I'm complaining. Every once in a while someone will be like, "YEAH GO NATIVE AMERICANS!!!" And everyone will just look at them all blankly. I don't think that there has ever been a formal complaint, even though we do have actual Native American people around here.
The big teams have "Indian" names... Braves, Warriors, Seminoles, etc.

Omg, I am SO going to get a horse and ride it across our football field!! I could get a paint horse (like the Native Americans first had) and try to make it relate?! Hmm.. not so much.

yeah, wouldn't really work for my high school or college since my hs are the eagles and ku are the jayhawks. we have mascots though, my hs has a kid in an eagle suit, and KU actually has 2 mascots, big jay and baby jay. baby jay was hatched out a of a giant egg at homecoming 1971, so the story goes.
