Okay so my BD had leadership team tryouts and picked all of the worst cannidates in my opinion. My section leader is terrible at playing and is cockier than anyone else in the world. My captian is the second cockiest and plays the trumpet fairly well. All of the others seem to be ill placed, and they will be leading twice as many people next year. Does my BD have any reason to do this? Because my section leader for next year is like Cartman when he gets authority. This is the first time my BD has done something that seems unlogical.

oh yeah.. we had a couple of bad apples. But we had some good ones too, especially this year. It's best to make good light in this situation.
You're going to have to deal with it anyways. This year we had some kids that bugged the heck out of me and saying some stuff that I didn't like, but I dealt with it and ignored it.
Usually director's may get the wrong impression, but that rarely ever happens. The directors, and teachers, know more about students than anyone thinks. They usually know more about your friends than you do. For example, we had two different trumpet captains, different years. One was a really good trumpet player, but had a bit of a temper, the other was a good trumpet player but could get on the wrong side. Both were questionable as to become leaders.
Remember this: the director's don't have to pick captains. For me, I was told that they wouldn't have picked a pit captain unless I proved that I could do it. I'm a wreck sometimes, very emotional under pressure, but I changed dramatically and therefore got the position for 2 years. And I'm told that my section loved me. If I had cracked under pressure, they wouldn't have given it to me. My band hasn't had certain section leaders before because of this situation.

The problem with my SL is that he doesn't care. He asked me why I was bringing my horn home after the BD had speant an hour telling us to practice our parts. It just seems like a completely random choice.
