Hmmm to us, our BD is a grandfather/father figure, demi god and a sarcastic semi-demented old geezer. But we love him anyways and he loves us even though he hates to admit it. He reminds alot of us of Mr. Feeny in both looks and wisdom. I know of more than one person that's called him for help in getting out of a tight spot or college recommendations or even just for advice. He may have a mercurial temperament, but he's only trying to help. =]

Our BD's are really fun. They are both really young and have only been teaching for two years, but they are cool and really care about us. The assistant bd is more personal with most of us, but that is mostly because he deals with all the wind instruments and our bd deals with the percussionists, but when I switched to contrabass he was cool on a one to one level. Most of my friends think he is kind of scary, but this is probably because of his peculiar personality - for example he puts stuff on his head when he is happy and jumps off the stage when we kill the chord. But he is the best motivational speaker I have ever heard and ever will hear.

Okay. Hello. I am the one that started this a while ago and I have another one to add. I am the one that is crazy about my director...yea you know how to read. Well today topped it all. I will not go into full detail becuase it will take some time. Long story short, my friend was in a serious accident and is not doing good. but thats not the point. my director stopped me, not knowing what was going on and asked if i was alright. and remember he didnt know what was going on. he told me if i wanted a day off or so then thats fine and i could take off whenever i want to. he also said it worries him to see me so upset. that was two days ago. well today it was after school and i was packing things up. he came up to me and we started to talk. eventually it got to the fact about my friend. but it was so...awing to see him act that way. i knew he was great, but i didnt know he would go out of his way to make sure i was okay. he started to cry and it was so sad. i was crying too...but thats beside the point. we talked for a good hour...about everyhting. it was wonderful and made me feel so much better to know that an adult, someone i have always looked up to cares so much about how i am doing, the way i always hoped he was but never really knew. It was great and it made me feel so much better. I hope everyone else realizes how great your director is and that if they dont show it, give it time. They would not be at school if they didnt care.

Well, because we're with them so much, the BD's at our school are more than just "teachers" to a lot of us.
But that level of respect and friendliness varies greatly.
Most people like the middle school director because he's really kind and friendly. The jazz kids LOVE or HATE our jazz teacher, because he's a smart alec but obsesses over jazz (and thinks you do too). Everyone seems to dislike our percussion director because he's... not the sharpest tool in the shed. As for our head BD, there's some issues about the way he runs things, but overall, people seem to like him (or dislike him). There's not really too many extremists anymore, but we're all pretty cool with him. He's more than a teacher; he's like a close coach is to a sports team. A lot of people like to joke with him, but he's not someone we'd confide in necessarily.

Yea. Well at the middle school age, you have to be friendly. Must be nice. We have one band director. Who does jazz, percussion, concert band, marching band. No assistant. But mine is more like an older brother, or a dad. He really is. Like I am explained above and several times, he is the greatest person I have ever met and I dont know what I would have donw without him anytime but more recently, Friday. I just dont know what I would have done.

Our BD is awesome. She's strict when it's needed, but when it isn't, she's right there joking with us. She isn't as funny as some band directors I've seen quotes from, but she relates a lot of her life in band to her two little boys. She refuses to let anyone quit. Last year, on our way home from a jazz festival, we were all laying on the floor in one of the parents' suburbans where they'd taken out the middle seat and left the back. Six of us were on the floor and she climbed into the back to hang out with us.

-thats great. when we go to nationals every year we go out to jillians when we are walking around down town indianapolis and you know it has a bar. well one time they kept us up there and he pole danced for us. got tons of pictures and videos. then he will do things and get right there with us. last year during camp one of our kids parents is a yoga instructor. we did yoga for about an hour in the morning. our director came right down and did it with us. it was great. i love him so much.

My bd is one of the strangest people I have the good fortune to know.
On most days of the week, my bd may not acknowledge your existence if you pass him in the hall. If you ask him a question, he'll act like he hasn't heard you for several seconds before answering. Sometimes he will go entire days without smiling. Not exactly a people person.
But on his good days, he's a great guy. He really does love us all, and he really does care. Whether it's leftover cookies after jazz band practice or him sitting up on the scaffolding at band camp for an hour and making duck noises, or him waiting for our rides to come so that we can wait in the nice warm band room instead of outside, we all know that under all the coldness he's just a big sweetie. He just doesn't show it all the other days. Most freshmen hate him, but if they stick around and get to experience him on his good days, they grow to love him. My bd is like a very strange uncle to us.

thats how mine is. the whole experience part. i love him more than anything. he is my hero. if you read my other posts, you will find him to be an outstanding guy. all the younger ones hate him. absolutely hate him. but the older ones, the ones that know him. this will be his fifth year, and he is the best thing that has ever happened to this school and me. you just have to get to know the true person he is.

^ Yeah, my bd may not be very nice to me or others on his bad days, but he's still my favorite teacher, ever. It's those little unexpected things he does, like giving our graduating senior first trumpet, who's a good player, but not a phenomenal player, a solo song in jazz band. Other than getting the trumpet solo in the marching band show, he hadn't really gotten to stand out and show his skills in all his 4 years in the band. It was nice.
And then there are the times when we're getting ready to perform in a huge marching band competition, we're all lined up, and he goes down the line and pumps fists with everyone. Again, being in my band is like having a very strange uncle.

My director almost acts like one of the kids. He's younger, sarcastic, wore a "Charlie the Unicorn" shirt (I'm the king of bananas!) to section leader day, and is always cracking a joke. But he can be serious and likes to get the job done.
