Okay...this might seem a little wierd, but my band director is not just another teacher to me. H eis the most compassionate person I know. He has been there for everyone and the great thing about him is we can talk about anything and he loves us all like we are his own flesh and blood. A normal teacher it would be wierd to talk to about some things but my bd is so casual, but yet so serious about things and he is so fun to be around. These things have gotten him blamed fro doing things he did not do but we are hanging in there. I will always remember this one time. We had practice after school and it was just me and him. Everyone else had went to their locker or car. We were talking when one of our guard girls runs in the band room screaming. My bd jumps up out of his chair and she is crying by this point. Her boyfriend is threatening her and chasing her. My bd puts her in his office and locks the door. He runs out the door and finds him. He was going to call the police but he was no where to be found. He was so caring and protective. I was just wondering if your bd is the same way as mine.

Sounds like a decent guy to me.No our BD is very closed off emotionally and it is hard to talk to him about band stuff let alone anything else, my BD from middle school was closed off too.To me theirs the cool but professional teachers, the closed off all business teachers and the surrogate big brother/ sister teachers. Each have advantages and disadvantages, big brother types often get accused of sexual misconduct with a student (true or untrue) but are really connected with the band. The cool but professional types tend to have a background that they keep separate that can breed rumors and speculation but they are also on good terms with the band while upholding the clear teacher/ student boundary.Closed off teachers are hard to deal with because you have little connection to them but they are generally the most knowledgeable and detail oriented. Thats my observation of most directors anyway.

Yeah, our first director this year (the best one), was the big brother type. He's on a "personal leave", but we don't expect him to come back. He was one of the best teachers ever. You could talk to him about just about anything, he'd be at the school at like 530 in the morning (and he lived an hour away), and he'd stay until everyone had left or another instructor arrived. He told us everything about his life, and he came to school even when terribly ill, just to inform us he would be gone, and that he'd call the school later to let us know why. He was the best teacher I have ever seen.
Our old marching tech was like that too. He wasn't as "big brother" type-y, but he was fantastic. He really helped you grow, and he's so easy to talk to! Now that the new marching guy kicked him out, we still see him at Applebee's (his real job). We just go and talk to him after rehearsals, complain, gossip, anything. We're even planning on going to Ireland with him in about 4 years.
I really hope everyone here has had a chance to have a fantastic director. I've had more than my fair share (we had 7 excellent techs over these two years, 2 great marching directors, and one of the best band directors ever). If you haven't had a director like this, just wait, I'm sure one will come to you. And when they do, it'll be the best feeling ever.

Our BD is the same. He is very serious during rehearsal and competition but hangs out with students whenever it's appropriate. He's cool to be around.

My bd is the big brother type. He gets accused of stuff...that he doesnt do...He is kind os professional, but he is the best teacher I have ever had. He helps you grow not only as a player or marcher, but as a person in general. I have had the physcopathic type that throws things and talks to walls and then I have had the best person I have ever met. He is amazing and I also hope everyone gets someone as great as mine.

Our's is the same. He is one of the most amazing teachers I have. but he's never gotten accused of anything. I guess no one would ever think of him like that because we know he's just one of the best people ever. he almost started crying when one of our flutes got in a car accident (luckily she barely got hurt) and he's always there for us when something's going on. he's absolutely fantastic!

I am glad yours is the same way. He is the kind of person that if you dont want to try he can become your least favorite person...I guess that is why he gets accused of things. But if you just try he is the best person you will ever meet. He was crying when a student at our middle school died of heart and lung failure. He didnt know who he was but one of our mello players in pep band was torn up about it...he was her best friend...and she came to pep band that night and she was a mess. He was crying because he saw how hurt she was. I dont know if he cried when our first chair flute player hit a deer coming to school or not. She was not hurt. I was not at school that day but I was one of the first to know. I know for a fact he cried along with me, when my best friends mom died. He was our bassoon player and his mom died. He was so torn up...so was I but it is not the same. I remmeber I was at my grandmas house. I knew she was very sick and in the hospital. She had lupus. Well I was making dinner and I get a phone call. It was my bd. I of course answer it. He said that his mother had passed away a couple hours ago. He was crying on the phone but I could tell he was tryng his best not to. I was the first student to find out. I talked to him for a while. He told me we could talk whenever I wanted to...we talked for a while but I started crying and hung up the phone. After dinner I went into my room and cried myself to sleep. It was good to know my bd was there for us whenever we needed him. We have all been through so much together in just the four and a half years he has been here. Good memories...not so good...but I m glad he is a person I can talk to no matter what.

We had some deaths a few years ago in our band, two trumpets I think. they were in a car with two guard girls and one of them died because he put his body in front of the girls in the car. it really hit the entire band, i mean, i was only in our fifth grade elementary band, and it was shocking to me. but he was talking to us about it and he cried. it's amazing to know that he really does care about his students.

Directors feel different from other teachers because they are! We walk into class every day, and just play together. If we do it wrong, they correct us right away and get personal. Most teachers just talk and maybe help you outside of class. In band, the goal is to sound good so that you can play in front of the rest of the school, and in front of many people you've never met. Not only that, but in band you go places. And, it seems at least, they try to be likable! If you don't get along with the BD, the band will sound worse. So, being friendly and personable is almost a requirement! It's awesome. One of the reasons why I love it so much.

While I did have a few issues with one of my high school band directors, he truly was dedicated to US. He helped so many kids in our program... it's unbelievable he got anything done. With 280 kids, that's a lot of issues, and we had some serious ones. There was the death of a student, death of band parents, physical abuse case, a custody case, and a rape that he helped people get through-- emotionally or pro-actively.
The assistant band director was amazing in the fact that he would listen to you... you could tell him anything with full discretion. It was easier for me to confide in him... He's moved on to the head position at another school and I wish him the very best of luck in the future because he really does deserve it. He loves his kids and music means so much to him.
On the other hand... my college directors are a bit distant. One of the directors knows my name and some things about me. Another knows my name and what I play. The other is not aware of my existence. They come into rehearsal, rehearse, and go off about their business. And we are college kids... we don't need them as much as we needed our high school directors.

They are different from any other teacher. I think thats why I like him so much because most teachers want you out of their class room...bds help you grow to go on and do better things. Band can help you in the future. You learn dedication, leadership, confidence, pride...all these things can help you later on in life.

Absolutly not! He's like my big brother. I love how I can just go to him and talk to him about anything. I love how after a solo I can just go to him and complain about how "horrible" my performance was and he's not like my mom who says that I did a good job, etc. he just listens and understands and offers advice. He also know us so well, I walked out of my solo and he had missed my sight reading so he asked me how it went. So I told him it was horrible and he asked me if it was really horrible or it was just me being a perfectionist. Also when my mom's friend died he moved his schedule around so he could attend the funerial. I also have problems with my mom, so when I get really upset I just talke to him and somehow he seems to make me feel better than any of my best friends could. He has also told me I could call him at anytime and he gave me his cell. On time my mom caught me wearing a shirt that I wasn't supposed to and she took me out to talk about it. When I came back in he gave me a look and I knew he knew what it was about. I play flute so, I sit directly infront of him and I can tell when I mess up because he gives me the "evil eye". My first director was okay, but I'm not sure that she really cared as much as he does. My current band director has been such a great influence on me, and so has my flute teacher, that they both have influenced me to become a music major, preferably a band director, so I can pass on the great joy that is music. I think it's because the band becomes a family. We sweat, laugh, cry, and suffer together which creates an increadble bond, which I'm sooooo happy to be a part of.

I was going to ask my BD to fill out a questionnaire for health that had to be filled out by a parent "or trusted adult."

Our BD is pretty cool, but alot of people don't really like him. But he's really nice. People seem to accuse him of things, but he's really not like that. He's just a regular BD who loves music, and students. He seems to know more then you would think. He's not currently under that "big brother" type, but more of a funny, animated, caring uncle. But I can see how people can not like him. He can make really bad jokes, and can go on forever about something that's barely realted to subject. xD But doesn't alot of old people/teachers do that?

I keep on adding things..lol. I know my bd loves music but I think he cares too much about what people think about him. Who cares what people think? My bd cares a lot about his students. He is the type that you can tell anything about and we need more teachers like that...we really do. No matter what anyone says I love my band director and he is my hero.
