spacermase: On the pot front... I've seen some people go through pretty profound stages while smoking. Its generally intellectually interesting, emotionally pleasing or both. The "interesting" aspect, means that you generally pick up on subtleties that you wouldn't have in a normal state of mind. Visual images are more intense, and feelings are more intense. You just kind of chill out because of the THC in pot. Time slows down and you have "more time" to think about the little things or the things that you don't have time to ponder normally. It's refered to as being on "pot time", ie hallways stretch on for longer than usual, songs are "longer" ect. Incidentally, pot compromises the ability to learn/retain new information (that you obtained while high), but not the ability to recall previously learned information. of course all of this is relevant to the "strength" that he may have been on. under the influence of some pretty strong stuff, I watched my friend have a "profoundly religious experience". and again, if he by chance consumed rather than smoked, you generally get a more hallucinogenic-type response. Pot has a really earthy smell. and its very easy to identify. And combining ANY sort of drug with sleep depravation is not a good idea. But it does sound like the problem was solved.
and the moral of the story is: Pot is not a smart choice. not only is it ILLEGAL but it does crazy stuff to you. I can't tell you how many kids in my dorm were busted for smoking pot this year. I'm pretty well versed in pot knowledge. I read lots and lots of books on drugs and other things of that nature. I watch people. and I listen. *nods*

Well, this has been an exciting evening.
The aforementioned suitemate came into my room, and, well, to make a long story short, he announced that he was in fact the Living Christ predicted by the all the Biblical prophecies, and that unless he told Obama this by his 21st birthday, the world was going to end (possibly by aliens).
At this point I realized that this was really serious, called my mom, who advised me to call Psych Services, and who also called campus police. I called Psych Services' emergency 24 hour hotline. The person on the other end was absolutely marvelous, and eventually ended up talking directly to the suitemate. The suitemate, to his credit, was apparently still has enough presence of mind to realize that something is wrong, and his inability to tell "what's real" is not a good thing (on top of everything else, he's apparently been having visions), so he was really compliant. Campus police sent two guys over to check things up, and they just took him to the ER to get him assessed.
So, yeah. It was a learning experience, to say the least.
And now I'm *finally* going to bed. Huzzah!

I'm glad he's at least temporarily taken care of. If he knows there's a problem, there's a good chance he will fix it.
And Baker is right; there are different strengths. Where I live, it's my understanding that "good stuff" is hard to come by, but out there, the situation could be much different. If it was one of the really couch-bounding strains and he was ingesting it, that explains three things: 1) why he had been smoking before and it had only recently gotten back, 2)why he was having such profound visions instead of sitting on the couch and watching Spongebob and 3) why you couldn't smell it. If there was smoke anywhere around him, you would have noticed it, especially with the presumed strength of whatever he was on. If he was eating brownies, then you probably would not have.

If you want to know what pot smells like, I can tell you it pretty much just...smells like a concert. If you go to any kind of show that doesn't check you extensively at the door and allows smoking, it will be there.
Although this weekend at the Memphis in May I discovered that pot hurts my head a whole lot less to smell than cigarette smoke does. But honestly, imagine this: Being in an extremely crowded, pushy pit full of drunk people, pressed up against the person in front of you so tightly that you can barely move your arms. Is your nicotine addiction really so bad that you have to wiggle around to get your hands in and out of your pockets and light it oh so carefully so as not to catch any hair on fire? Ugh. People. Now, I admittedly have never been addicted to anything so I guess I don't understand. But still. It ticked me off.

I'm glad your issue is *more* resolved Spacermase. Oh those UVa kids... and I hope the poor guy turns out to be ok. Walon Skirata: I'm not sure that "skunk" is the word to describe it, but it is definitely a pungent smell. Stalker: haha, yes concerts definitely smell like pot. and the smoke is certainly more gentle to smell than cigarette smoke. .... holy crap, I sound like an authority on pot. I hope you guys don't think less of me. :/ I promise I'm not a pothead.

Good to hear spacermase - hopefully he can get those issues worked out. I hope for his sake it is not a mental illness and just exhaustion. But if it is mental illness, hopefully it got taken care of in time and he can get the help he needs. You done good.

There definitely are strains that smell that way, but they aren't all the best; that's about where my knowledge runs out.

My boyfriend is meeting my brother and father tonight. I'm slightly nervous (and I do have reason to worry, last time my family met a guy I was dating they put naked baby pictures all around the house, thankfully those are halfway across the country)

Well. Glad to see that you people do PRODUCTIVE things and have EDIFYING conversations while I'm out... As far as that's concerned... hm. Pot smell (and trust me, German class does amazing things for drug sniffing capabilities)... It's like normal smoke... but more chemical, as if you were burning fertilizer or something like that. You really have to smell it to understand it. And I'm allergic to ... everything... so any smoke is irritating for me, I really can't vouch there. Don't do drugs. Please.

I'm not suprisingly used to the smell of cigarettes, being that I and several of my co-workers do it.
