ok so the major problem my guard runs into year after year is the lack of performance. we work on carriage, we work on smiling, but it just all dies at performances. any tips? we've tried a lot of stuff, its just down to the personal level now. we always start off strong, but it trails away. i mean we have an entertaining and upbeat show, but it just never clicks all the way through. help please? =]

To keep them smiling, put a really disgusting tasting thing on their teeth. Make sure it's something edible and/or safe.

encourage them to practice performing in rehearsal all the time, not just right before a show. practice makes perfect and that includes performing too.

I think the key to performance is more than tricking them into a distorted grimmace. I'd say pep talks about the difference between just doing it and performing it, etc. Give some demonstrations of the same work done just so, and then done with a high level of energy and performance.
I think my guard (I'm not in it any more) gives awards, or at least recognition or something, to the member(s) who perform best in each runthrough or show. You could try incentives like that.

we always seemed to do better in performances where we had a fun warm up. we played upbeat music in stretch, and kinda got our blood pumping a little before we went on. if you can make a fun warm up routine in stretching, then it will get people smiling and that often carries onto the field/floor.
also you might want to see if you can put in certain breath, like on count 8 everyone take a deep breath and exhale loudly. it adds character. people often have more fun if they can be kinda flirtatious on the field. flipping hair and winking is often a good way to keep things lively. sometimes it takes a little to get to the point where it is fun and not work, but the more comfortable they are with the work, the more fun they can have.
