So at my school, you can only be a DM if you are a senior. All my fishy friends say I should try out for DM. I'm not sure if I want to, I dont like the thought of all the responsibility. Any past/current/whatever DM have any advice? Thanks so much

If you don't want the responsibility, don't ask for it. Drum major carries more responsibility than most people who do want it realize, so if you're already scared of it, chances are you won't handle it well. I don't mean any personal offense by this, but that's my observation.

If your scared of something you can use that energy to not be. for example handling stress. If you stress over a test, your going to study. you can turn it into positive stress because now you can be confident you are ready. my first question is how many DM's do you have? well I myself am a sophomore DM. I can't say I was prepared for the responsibilities. I learned really quickly with the help of the older DM. I can say I've had a successful year. (can't say that for my BD) I was chosen out of all the seniors that tried out and everyone. Obviously they thought I was the most fit for the position and for my band. my point is, there's no harm in trying out. You just have to be serious about it. Your not really trying out for you. your trying out for the band and that's what the judges are looking for, the best for your band. If they choose you, you obviously are best fit. you obviously already have respect by the support your fishy friends are giving you. That's a good sign of leadership. I say go for it. my favorite saying is "dare to be great." If you dare to be great the band will follow and that's trully the purpose of a DM, to lead the band forward. You just have to get over your insecurities and put the band first.
