So, I admit now that this is a pipe dream, but one of the things I've thought of doing is majoring in music comp in college and writing music/arranging/writing marching shows for a living. I realize there is very little money in composing, and that I would need a day job, but other than that, can it be done?

Yes. And you don't even hace to be that good- just look at Frank Ticheli. Ok that was kind of mean, but I don't like his stuff that much. My advice would be take some entry level music theory and composition classes in college, and if you like it, then make it your major (many schools don't require you to pick until sophomore or junior year).

you.............don't...........like....... Ticheli............. you must be new here. I'm the_sousabone, and I have a shrine to Frank Ticheli in full view of everyone that walks into my room. Have you listened to all of his stuff or just one or two songs?
but to keep this from hijacking the thread. I fully intend on majoring in composition and film scoring after I get my Associates in recording ( which I'm currently pursuing). It can be a career. Where's Scott Benson? he's the current resident comp major on TFBC.

I've always thought of composing, but it could also be done as part of a music education job. My head BD writes/arranges music as a side job, and my asst. BD does our drill. I plan on taking a few composition classes in college anyway, even if it turns out just to be for fun.

I suppose I have no right to object until I can do better, but, still, compared to this or this or maybe this... well you get the picture. I'm taking AP music theory right now and am fully loving it. I am soooo taking theory in college.

^ Yes it does. But Oscar lives in Colorado. There are people at UNT who are from Korea, China, Germany, Czech Republic...name a country, and there's probably someone from there who goes to UNT. Colorado isn't really that far away ;-) In fact, I have a few friends who are from Colorado who actually carpool with each other when they go home for breaks. And no problem, Oscar. The program is very VERY new-music oriented, but I'm sure you'd get a lot out of it no matter what kind of music you like (and to be honest, new music seems to be the way a lot of places are going anyway).

I know.... But there are people for whom location is an issue. They have a great jazz program too.

I know.... But there are people for whom location is an issue. They have a great jazz program too. the thing is...in the music world, you can't go somewhere based on location. It's sort of one of the crappy things we as music majors have to deal with. If you are given the opportunity to go to a top school in the country, but that's far away, then it would be unwise to pass that up. Granted, where you do your undergrad isn't quite as important as where you do your graduate degrees, but composition majors especially want to be careful where they have their start, as many smaller "local" schools leave much to be desired in their theory programs, and also a lot of smaller schools will not let people major in anything but education or music industry as an undergrad. You cannot go wrong with the theory program at UNT. In the UNT theory classes, you will have learned more by the end of theory 2 than most schools teach in 4 theory classes. Plus all the other more specialized theory and composition classes that UNT offers. UNT is a BIG school, with a LOT of resources, and a lot of top faculty. You just can't get that kind of training at many other schools.

At my college-of-choice you can major in theory OR composition. And they are well known for their music program as well. However, location isn't an issue because I can take up legal residence with any of my 2.5 x 10^n relatives who live over there. Yay.

If you get a $500 or more scholarship at any Texas state university (including UNT), you automatically get an out of state waiver. And it is easy to get a scholarship at UNT.
