I have it from a very reliable source that we will be doing the Journey show that was originally billed for last season We finally have the arrangements (long story) and it is going to rock. We might be doing it for Ohio State, which would be satisfying. Once I know more I'll do my traditional "Official Un-Official" show list.

Everyone is asking and the BD says he has an idea. He says it will include marching and playing.

So, our show is officially Birdland, Take 5 and then Sing, Sing, Sing. Take 5 is, of course, in 5/4 and our BD has to rewrite it from a jazz arrangement...should be interesting.

^I've marched Birdland and Sing,Sing,Sing, and they're both relatively sane. (I'm assuming you'll be marching the condensed Sing, Sing, Sing because the real piece lasts for FOREVER with all the solos, nice piece to listen to, killer to dance/play)
So basically you're doing a swing/jazz show? Those are fun (unless your school does choreographed band dances... that gets scary)

Yeah, we have one solo. We may add a trombone one, but it would take up space over the drum solo. Total of about sixty measures I think.
Anyone have advice on marching in 5/4? I think we're doing the one, two, three, four, stop method.

it shouldn't be too hard to march in 5/4. I don't know how your band marches, but what my band would do is just have 10 count sets, if that makes any sense...that way there is an even number of counts in each set and you can still start on the correct foot.

Anyone ever done Rise of the Samurai Warrior? That's one we're considering.

We just had our first Section Leader meeting, so I can now present to you the Official Unofficial Tentative Show List for the University of Illinois Marching Illini! As of right now, our 2009 shows will consist of selections from: JOURNEY BEN FOLDS in addition to a Jazz show featuring BIG NOISE FROM WINNETKA YOU, ME, AND A BOTTLE MAKES THREE (TONIGHT, BABY) ZOOT SUIT RIOT some kind of boy band show, and a Halloween show featuring NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN DANCE MACABRE THRILLER TOCCATA AND FUGUE Basically, a really wild season that sounds like a LOT of fun. Oh, and we're getting new uniforms. Huzzah!

How did your school get the performance rights for a Journey show? We just happened to be discussing show ideas in my marching band tech class today, and my professor said that Journey won't let you arrange their music. When we did a Journey show last year (which rocked, btw), we used UGA's arrangement from 2003.
