yeah, i guess big east coast school bands don't work the same as in the midwest. i'm planning to go to University of Kansas (already got my acceptance letter yay!) for education. the band is open to anyone, you just sign up. i think d-line auditions for parts and guard might have auditions too. something i should look into since i plan on doing guard since i don't play a band instrument.

Omg, now you guys have me freaked out a bit. After cornell i was thinking of Penn State and if I go Penn State its a NECESSITY I get into band or i will become emo and be a loner my whole life....
Would it be crazy to start the french horn/mellophone now and try to get in with it at Penn State? I don't really enjoy the clarinet like I used to. (Im a sophomore) I'm considering private lessons since I WILL need them even though I dont where to get them. And Im guessing its advised to buy my own french horn AND mellophone? For practice purposes? I don't trust myself just buying a french horn and audiotining with a mello that makes me sound like someone is passing gas...
Plus, I read on their band site that even returning member must audition. So thats good and bad...
Good because you have a greater chance as more slots are available. (but if they are returning they probably were decent so....ya...might as well pretend they retake their spots?)
Bad because if you get in first year, if you slip, your watching your band from the stands for a year....and thats just sad and pitiful. =(

I really dont think youll need to buy a mellophone. If anything, use your schools mello as a practice tool. If your school doesnt own one, ask your band director about it, chances are he can hook you up with one from another school. Mellophone is different than horn, but marching band directors realize this and they do not expect you to have your own mello. I understand your freaking out though because when I marched I used to think I'd need my own bmarching baritone because the mechanics are a bit different than euph. I'd concentrate more on buying a good french horn as opposed to a mello.

They borrowed all my money. They literally are in debt to me over a thousand bucks...

1. We're what used to be Div 1 sothe KU band usually gets to go to a bowl game with the football team and I'm assuming the Basketball Band would get to go to March Madness since bball is huge down here.
2. See my above post. You could try Syracuse too. They're almost always in March Madness. Same with UConn
3. I dunno about woodwinds and brass, but the KU drumline has a pretty intense audition camp in May. The guard has an audition camp too, but they haven't made cuts for quite a few years now. Band websites usually list their audition requirements.
4. The KU band doesn't go to every away game, but this year we're going to the Texas and K-State games as well as Kansas City to play Mizzou in the traditional Border Battle. K-State will probably be up and back in the same day because it's not far to Manhattan from Lawrence. Texas might be a longer trip. The Border Battle is probably also up and back in a day because KC is only 45 minutes away.
P.S. Hey Baylor people, perhaps I'll see you at a game sometime!!
