I really like 5/4; 6/8 is growing on me.
I hate cut time, however. If one of you composer types can explain to me a reason for its existence and why exactly it's superior to just writing it in 2/4 to start with, I will be obliged.

My favorite time signature is 6/8, mainly because of the triplet feel. I love the sound of triplets, for no apparent reason.
The only thing I have against 6/8 is duplets. They don't agree with me. lol.

when it comes to cut time, think of two things. What if i were to march this, or what if I had to conduct this. would you wanna conduct 4 minutes of 200? or march it? probably not (unless you're a cavalier)
and I like 9/8 11/8 and 13/16. I like odd metered stuff.

I'm quite partial to 3/4, 6/8, and anything similar. Like let1troll, I love triplets.

I'm on the bandwagon with 6/8, especially when in a minor key. 5/4 and 7/4 are good as well, when you know how to count them consistantly.

I honestly like 6/8 in 2, not just because everyone else seems to. It's so... swoopy and bouncy and intimidating but easy. I hate things like 6/4 and 12/8 and 3/2, though. It's just too weird for me

I love 7/8 for some reason, 1212123 style I also like 6/8 time in 123123 style. 6/8 seems to be pretty popular!

I really like 9/8, there's so many ways it can be divided, it's just fun! 12/8 is ok, except for Seussical when instead of writing "swing 8ths" on the top, the guy wrote whole songs in 12/8. *annoyed* And no one has said 1.5/4? Where's the Grainger fans out there?

7/8 is definitely my favorite, though 5/4 is also a close favorite. I used to not like 5/4, because it confused me (especially when I had to figure out a snare part for Mission: Impossible), but after playing Mars, I love it. My favorite piece (partially) in 7/8 is Slava!... it's so much fun!

I love the feel of 10/8.
As far as benefits of cut time versus 2/4, it's a matter of transcription. You could accomplish the same thing using 16th notes in 2/4, but 8th notes in cut are just easier to read and follow.

Cut time developed because of marching band and that is why you see it in soooooo many marches. It's pretty much what sousabone said- so you don't kill yourself by marching quickly. Same thing for 6/8. Developed as a means of marching 3. And it's nice and bouncy, so it and 12/8 (yaaay Pirates of the Caribbean) are my faves.

I think cut time also helps make the music more readable, expecially with faster passages. Would you rather look at 8 measures of 16th notes or 16 measures of 8th notes?

Yes but it means that when you *do* see 16ths in cut time you want to stab yourself...
