Well, basically all I know for sure is that it'll be based in Vista, California. I am currently contacting companies to see if they will be a sponsor; oh, and I also contacted the City of Vista. I am trying to get more people recruited, I currently have one (who is just a maybe). If that guy stays on, I need at least one more to be on the board of directors (or something like that), because you need three people to apply for non-profit status with the government. Then, before anything else, like five different forms have to be filled out (employer ID number, articles of incorporation, tax exemption, bulk mail permit, etc). I can fill out some of those forms myself, but I just turned 18. You have to give me a break! I wonder how LAWYERS can even read some of that stuff =/ Basically, after all that, the corps can get on it's feet, if it has sponsors, and everything can get going. The mission statement will be something like: "To keep kids off the street, putting more education and music in their lives; make them believe that there is more to life than the seeing eye can see." And the Corps name? All I could come up with, that sounds halfway decent, is The Power of Sight.

I know starting a corps won't be easy, and I know I probably won't be able to have DCI review the corps until at least the second year. But my goal for the first year is to do what exactly Bill Cook did, and get corporate sponsorship; while recruiting people for the corps. The first year would do nothing but exhibition shows, but it would show everyone that we're out there and trying to make it. And I'm not actually trying to start a World Class corps. If it gets to be World Class, then yay! But I'm starting a corps because the nearest one to me is two hours away, and no one was willing to house me. I spent more money on gas than the tour fee!!! I just want people to be able to have the same experience as I did; my summer was wonderful!
And non-profit organizations can be hard work! You have to file for an employer ID number, then articles of incorporation, then tax deductibles, then tax exemption, bulk mail permit, and more! I could become a lawyer with how much I have learned =/ Well, okay. Not really. But still... (oh, and after all that, you still need to be able to get sponsors and people on staff and the whole corps set up!)

It be good because, though there are only two others in the west, if you create a new one, have it compete on the field, everyone is happy. DCA has been hoping for a new corps out west. You have 2 other corps in CA, SoCal Dream and the San Francisco Renegades

you'll also have an easier time recruiting since senior DCA corps have a higher age-out (I think, since I'm not actually in one, I still march high school mb).
if you have problems with starting a corps, maybe you should look into a corps that's farther than two hours. maybe that's why Impulse wouldn't house you.

our youngest member was 14, turned 15 over the summer. It was cool. That's what I love about senior corps. youngest 15 oldest somewhere around 50. and we all worked together in harmony. It's a lovely thing to see. And quite amazing when you really think about it

Good evening all! thought I would wade in on a few things as one of those 'old guys' who marches in the all age circuit, and have been doing competitive drum corps for about 35 years.
DrumCorps - I applaud your enthusiasm and wish you best of luck. As some have indicated it is not a small undertaking in putting a drum corps on the field. my best additional advice is to take it slow and be deliberate in your planning. one thing that comes to mind over everything else that has been mentioned though is have you done anything to determine the level of interest in your area? I think that would be a very important part of your success - you could put together a dynamite administration and design teams, but unless you have the performers, you dont have a drum corps.
there were several other all age corps in California, one which was being formed near you was one called En Garde - I believe that one was located in Granada Hills. I believe they have postponed their development for this year, as their organizers have had some personal difficulties which prevented them from concentrating fully on the corps' development.
All Age - you are correct, there is no age limitations, and therefore you have more potential marching members as well as a larger pool of folks who probably have experience at marching as well as organizing that you could capitalize on. I have marched with members as young as 12 (usually with one of their parents or family members) and have known several who were marching performers up to their late 60s. after that, most folks finally 'grow up' and do their performing either on the sidelines in support of the younger corps members, or maybe on the field in the honor guard.
yes, unfortunately there have been folks who have died 'on the field' in all age. some by health reasons, some by accident (lightning). The Kilties - one of the original DCI junior division powerhouses that disbanded then changed to an all age corps - lost one of their members in the middle of their DCA prelim performance a few years ago. very sad.
Sousabone - if you marched Buccaneers (re your avatar), then your oldest member was 54. that was Walt Street, the horn section leader (i believe) and baritone soloist. He is a good friend of mine, having marched together in the 80s with a large DCA corps from Pittsburgh, and before that, competed against one another in junior corps in the southwestern PA drum corps circuit of the early 70s. an outstanding musician, teacher, and person. you were lucky to spend time with him.
final word has to be if you have the chance and drive to form a performance organization, drum corps, band, whatever, do it but do it thoughtfully. And if you have the chance to experience drum corps at any level, do it - you won't regret the effort.
51 years old, still going strong, and planning on marching until they close the lid...

Yes, that's who I was refering to. I don't think he was the horn section leader this year but perhaps in years past he was. this was my first year so I don't know much about the other years. But yes Walt is a very smart man and an amazing musician. Never without a tip or hint towards becoming a better musician or even a better person.
