I've got a friend in my section who I'm trying to help prepare to be assistant DM next year and head DM the next two years. She's having the same doubts I did when I was offered DM- she doesn't want to give up playing. I was wondering what you guys who have made the switch would say is the reason it's worth giving up playing in order to lead the band. Thanks!

I didn't wanna stop either at first, but after i gave it some thought, it's really gonna be worth it. I think it's gonna be alot more fun being the leader and role model of the band. But remeber, ultimatly it's her decision, but maybe you could convince her to be assistant DM (do you still get to play? I have no idea how that works) and if you really want her to end up being DM, show her by example, let her see for herself what it's like and stuff. That's the best I got. haha

The problem with that is that A) I'm not drum major, I'm horn sergeant, so I can't personally show her (I turned down the position), and B) Our current drum major isn't very happy with her position.
Also, no, our band doesn't allow DM's or assistant DM's to play, they're conducting full-time.
I'm hoping some current DM's could give me some of the good points, maybe some stories?

well i dont have a problem with not playing or marching lol its less work for me but sometimes i get bored and when the band is marching i might jump in to march or during sectionals i might pick up a mellophone and play it i havent fully lost the satisfaction playing or marching because i still do it maybe it is just because i have so much extra time on my hands especially during band camp that when im not need to conduct ill march instead and plus when the rest of the band sees you marching they tend to complain less because you do it to and obviously know how it feels..... but thats just me *shrugs*

That's kinda the position she wants to be in next year- still able to play with us once in a while, etc.
Really, though, no drum majors want to tell me glory stories of what makes being drum major all worth it in the end?

i think the difference is at my school is that you get picked for DM and its such a huge honor and its such a big deal. my BD would never just offer it when its announced who got it its like a riot breaks out because it means so much
but i love being DM there are a lot of perks and peoples respect you so much more not to mention that the uniforms are awesome lol and now i always get hit on i cant walk past the drumline or trumbet section without getting winked at but its flattering *shrugs*

i'm trying out this year, so i wouldn't know how much better drum major is. i was the same way i didn't want to leave my fluttie tutties, but once i started to conduct when i got bored in class, i fell in love. now i stand in front of my mirror and conduct for hours... i lose track of time i enjoy it so much. i think that it's in your blood, if your friend doesn't want to do it then she shouldn't. she should devote herself to being drum major 210%. she also shouldn't do it just because she wants power, that's why one person from my school is doing it.

I tried out for dm a couple days ago and made it. That was a hard decision for me also, wether to march my clarinet or to try out for dm. I had a solo last season and I loved it. I love playing my clarinet and I love marching. It is my favorite thing in the world. I tried out becasue I wanted to make a difference. I knew I could do it and I love having people look up to me...I know I dont have to be a dm for that to happen..but, I know the decision I made was the riht one.
I am exactly like fluttietuttie41493. I will be conducting in my room and I will loose track of time because I love it so much. I think your friend will make the right decision. Help her through it because I know it was a hard choice for me and I was glad to have my friends with me helping me out.
Oh, is anyone on her going to the George Parks Drum Major Academy this summer. I am and it wil be my first time...just wondering...

Yea, I am really good friends with our old dm and I go to her for advice. We were talking about where to go and I told her I was going to Alabama. I live in Ohio but I really wanted tto get out of here and I figured the people in Alabama would have a different look on things and I want to meet new people. She has told me so many stories about dma. I am really excited. It seems like fun and I have been on the web site so many times. I am happy to be getting the oppertunity to be in a place where everyone feels the same way I do about music and life. I am already planning the trip and it is still a few months away.
