I think airblades are cheating. I mean, the POINT of spinning a rifle or saber is that it's hard...don't cheapen it.
I'm the one who thinks that bladed tosses are a sin against God, though.

Hey don't dis the airblade. It can be hard to spin b/c the grip is a cross b/w a rifle and a sabre, not to mention it's had to catch when tossed. On the bright side though it won't blow away on a windy day.

Theres just something wrong about spinning a piece of plastic...
The fact that it doesn't blow is nice, and you can do all sorts of ground work with it, but its just kind of awkward for me to spin.

i completely understand it being awkward...trust me, it took a LONG time to get used to it, and now I have to ease back into rifles because their smaller, but heavier...but it is NOT cheating (to whoever said that) every piece of equipment has its challenges...flags are big and the silks get caught...swing flags get sails easily...sabres are FAST and you have to get hand positions right, etc. etc. airblades are no exception just because dropspins are easy doesn't mean the piece of equipment ITSELF is...congratulations, you can drop-spin. Now can you do a double and flip it while doing a one-legged releve? Or the groundwork...if you push it at the wrong angle, the entire guard looks wrong...and if you drop doing a toss (single, double, triple, ANYTHING!) and it hits the ground on the rounded side, it can slide 20 feet (very difficult to get back into formation) so DON'T tell me spinning airblade is CHEATING!!!!!!!!

I'm not in guard, but I'm learning so I can join indoor guard next year. I have a favorite flag and I named it Arwen.

Okay, I was wrong about them being easy. I thought the point of them was to be easy to spin...I guess I was wrong.
What I meant was, the weapon line is descended from saber and rifle drill in the Army, and I think that having a "weapon" that is designed to be tossed just cheapens it. I mean, you may as well march a band full of EWIs, or better yet, keytars. They're light, always in tune, and don't require reeds. Do I make sense?
For a bandie though, especially from a band that has no guard, I'm pretty Nazi about the color guard. As far as I'm concerned, they should look somewhat like a military drill team, because that is their origin, and they should treat their weapons like real weapons, as in, not touching the blade, and saluting in the right way for the weapon...okay, you get the idea.

I got my airblade for my birthday - I named it Miranda My Sabre is jack (as in Jack sparrow lol) And seriously - don't knock the 'blade. It is not easy, and it does go far away if you drop. It is a lot of fun to spin though, and it is a good beginner weapon, because it made the transition to sabre and rifle much easier for me. I have only done one year of guard, and I am already pretty good. I am working on getting my 45's (back to flag now, lol) less parallel looking, while girls who have done it for three years going on four ( I am going on two) have not even attempted them. So don't diss the airblade - they are very good pieces of equipment.
