our band doesn't do it. some bands require guard members to also be in band, so most kids who do it are already in band they just don't want to march with their instrument.

We don't require guard members to learn instruments, though most of them do (or have at some point) play in band. I have heard of marching bands requiring members to be a part of the band program as a class as well, though, so that could be what your director is dealing with.

Many of our guard play instruments. Many do not. Those who don't serve as hosts at the concerts during the rest of the year.

yeah, people in my guard aren't required to be in any sort of music, but most are. we struggle with recruitment as it is.

The guard in my band arent required to learn an instrament even though some do. But we do have a rule about band people not being allowed to do guard or winter guard. It has something to do with the face that our band director wants people that can play instarments to march and other people to be in guard.

Wow, that is so weird! Our guard definitely is all former/current band members. They've been in band since fifth grade, same as the people who march their instruments. And after marching season is finished they go back to playing what ever instrument they would have marched. I really prefer it this way, because then we all still feel like a giant fam-fam, even after marching season finishes. ;D

yeah, neither my hs band or my college band require guardies to play instruments in band. but at least for my hs, most of us were involved with music at some point in our lives, mostly band, but we've had a few orchestra and choir people. my college guard seems to be a mix of musical and non-musical people.
