I'm not a sax player but I like tenor because it's closest to the human voice.

Tenor saxes are amazing. So are baris. Altos can be cool, but their low notes are so boring....nowhere near the richness of a tenor's lower register or the honking of a bari sax's low A...........

I think alto when played right is great and also in the right context. like overall i love the tenor, if played with enough air, all mine are lame and dont. i think alto is great in slower peices when you get fast its not so good. The contra sounds like an earth quake. Bari is good too its soo rich.
in this peice my band played there was a soprano sax solo and it was the most heart wrenching thing. same with this jazz peice, its like a clarinet but better. soo if you like clarinet alot then go for this one. its good in small doses.
so i guess if your going for fun parts and good contermelodies pick alto. also alto is easyer to march.
if you really like sound all the time go for tenor
if you like bass line stuff bari or contra. but im sorry contra doesnt have much pracitical use its just an earthquake.
personally i love my alto, my bd has trained me in such a way i sound like a horn almost with out the missing the notes. and in jazz although tenor is king, in big bands (which i love) the alto reigns supreme!

To me, bari's are kind of like reverse French horns--they're woodwind instruments that generally play brass-esque parts. The alto's parts, however, are just weird.

Yes, alto saxophone can play fast and sound good. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yilNSoUKYlcOur recently graduated uber amazing DM played this for the Spring Concert. She was an All- Stater and the first female saxophonist to make top chair at region jazz band ever. I love this concerto- it's really unique in that there is no key signature, it's all just written in as accidentals.
