In All-State, one of the drums broke. Our director went over to fix it. The percussionists had these expressions of utmost concern looking over his shoulder as he revived the drum.

Oh, and then there's the mouthpiece I killed in fifth grade. I dropped it on my instrument. It chipped off at the top. I cried for two hours.

My other dead trumpet story comes from someone who used to work at Music-go-round and is now working at OSU repairing instruments, I think for the marching band. (be scared you guys!) Anyway, aparently aparently there is an acidic solution sometimes used to de-laquer brass instruments. This person and his roomate (learning about instrument repair) put a trumpet in this solution and forgot about it... over night. The next morning... it was gone! ^omg, that's hilarious! I'd like to see the looks on their faces!! Not exactly killing it, but my brother was being stupid and dropped a juggling ball down his alto sax...on purpose!! I had to fish it out. Also, my friend's clarinet suffered a major injury right before our show. One of the rings on the top wasn't working right, so she asked me if I could figure out what was wrong. I looked at that rod that the rings connect to, and noticed the screw on that rod was all the way out, then, it just fell out!! This led to a bottom part of the rod comming off completly and me completely freaking out!! Both the bds were busy, so I fixed it myself (luckly I had a screw w/me!!!) I've also done DYIs on my clarinet, school clarinets, clarinets loaned to me while mine's in the shop, two friend's clarinets, my bro's sax, a loaned alto while his was in the shop, a tenor sax rental, school owned tenor sax, and school's Eb clarinet.......geez, the instruments just never seem to work right!

^That happened to me in 6th grade. I didn't notice the screw was coming loose, and one day, when I was putting my clarinet together, the key that you push to play the D below the staff just fell off. I freaked out. But my middle school BD fixed it, so it all turned out ok, lol.
Now, every time I put it together, I always check the screw to see if it's loose lol. (Yes, I still have my same clarinet from 6th grade)

One of our bass drummers completely broke the drum head one day during practice. I looked over and there was a giant hole in it, with the drumstick stuck inside.

Oh yea! Another one is from my brother (he's a semi-band geek, he just won't admit it) but neways, he told me that during his rehearsal last year, his bd got mad that one of the snares couldn't play something right and wasn't playing it loud enuff, so she went back to demonstrate it, and she hit the drum so hard she speared it. ...Shish-kabob anyone?

Lol more like snare-kabob. Last year at band camp, I flat out dropped my saxophone on the field. I had taken it off the neckstrap, and I guess my hand slipped. I bent three keys and my got dirt all in my reed and mouthpiece. Other than that not much damage though.

I killed my bari sax again.
I set it on a desk.
I was sitting next to it on said desk.
I stood up.
Walked to the other side of the room.
Heard the piano player gasp.
I turned around and I swear I saw it in slow motion.
The bari fell.
Flipped over once.
And fell key side down on the chair.
Oh yeah. That was five minutes before a performance I had a solo in. The only notes I could play were the ones that only require left fingers.

^ Oh geez. Was it that bad?
I was trying out saxes in this music store. I'd set one down on its stand. A few minutes later, I realized it was leaning a bit too far over..... and I caught just in time, saving me 4500 dollars.

My friend dropped his bari on the field at one point and then had to march his contralto clarinet, which he promptly broke the thumb rest off.

Was practicing Clarence outside before Christmas break and... I felt something hit my leg. Rule one: When you feel something hit your leg, FIND OUT WHAT IT IS IMMEDIATELY. It was a screw from the thumb key. The key fell off and I almost didn't get it back from the shop before Christmas break. No taco. :-p
