Okay. So I've searched, and a clarinet room has not been established. So...well, here it is, I guess. How many people here play clarinet? Or how many people here want to learn how to play clarinet? Do you need advice? I think you all probably get the hang of this thread. This should be interesting!

Woo! I "started" on clarinet in 6th grade, but I had to teach myself. Then I moved to SW Oklahoma when I was going into 7th grade, and at the end of 7th grade, I switched to bass clarinet (just temporarily) to help out our lows (we only had one tuba, and nothing else), and I played bass clarinet for two pieces during concert season in the High School band in 8th grade...and played Soprano clarinet for the others. And I'm glad that I didn't make the switch to Euphonium in 7th grade. There was a time in 7th grade when I was going to play the euphonium. I'm extremely happy that I didn't make the switch. I love the euphonium and all, but, I love my clarinet.

I own a clarinet, and play it occasionally, but I definately don't march with it, or even play it in concert season. It's fun though, it's just my clarinet isn't really a good model, but I'm still happy with it.

I didn't realize how much I enjoyed playing the clarinet until I picked it up again and began playing it with other people--okay or good--and our band after nearly 3 months of not playing it, just because I was burned out on band at the end of year (I hardcore needed a break). Actually, I was generally burned out on school. Never again... But I can say that not playing it for a while made me appreciate the instrument more. It's my main instrument, and I've also been playing it since the 5th grade, though I played bassoon last concert season, which was interesting as well as fun, even if the school's bassoon is terrible. I even got to play it in jazz band! Only as a solo though (I play alto sax in jazz band normally), which was in Moonlight Serenade. And I played it in the pep band that plays at basketball games, which is the jazz band.

I have played clarinet since 1997. Even though this year I won't be marching with my Desperado, I will be playing it in Community Band and AU Concert Band. I started in fourth grade, and always will be a clarinet player at heart! I will be celebrating 10 years of playing my main instrument in 2007!!!!

Anyone play alto clarinet? my bd hates them, so we never get to use them for concert band even when there's a cool/important part, but my friend got to play it for clarinet choir and i stole it from her sometimes(with permission of course :-P). Those things are super-spiffy!

^ Oh my gosh! I love the alto! It's freaking awesome! We have one, but holy crap! That thing is in TERRIBLE condition!!!!!!!!!! It's tone holes need adjusted, and it needs new pads...It needs a complete overhaul....with the addition of a new alto clarinet buddy (prefferably a Selmer. Bust as far as soprano and bass clarinets go, I'm all for Buffet!!!). I was playing the alto clarinet part to one of our contest pieces last year. I found a really good alto mouthpiece, and just started playing with one of my fabric ligatures. I eventually stole (well..actually I just started using it) a tenor sax ligature and used it instead. But yeah, the alto is pretty spiffy. lol. I like the contra-altos!!! Man, those things are AWESOME! I also want to play a G clarinet (yes...a G. Hardly ever used...but quite cute. If I do say so, just a tad cuter than the Eb.) But I love the Eb as well.

I know at Ashland High, they didn't have an alto clarinet. But, yet again, I don't think that college has them either. I did play the e-flat for like one day, but then, I just wanted back to b-flat, so. . . .thanks prongs for the compliment! So, is anyone considering playing clarinet professionally as they get older? (I know I am not, but just curious)

^ WOO! Heck yes!!! I love the contra-alto!!! Marchingclarinetgirl2006, I'm going for it all in clarinet performance when I get to college. With my work ethic, though, I'm going to for my Ph.D in performance and education, and I'm hoping to try to shave a 1/2-1 year off.

Well, any help that I can be, just hollar!!!! And, it is a good idea that u have a back up, just in case. But, I wish u luck in that department. Being a clarinet player is an honor, so, play with all your heart! (okay, this is for anyone that doesn't play one)

;DWe have an Eb clarinetist at our school. That thing is a weapon in her hands, she can get so HIGH! Surprisingly the Eb's tone comes out very well in Sousa marches despite the music's loud and boisterous nature. At least, that is where I hear the midget the most.
Edit: I say midget in positive connotation.
