I've decided John Williams is second only to Copland

Does Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt count? If so, they are amazing. =]

Ah, the Pirates of the Carribean score writers. Possibly the only ones to get as much acclaim as Williams for writing movie music.

I'm starting to like film soundtracks. I love James Newton Howard. He did the King Kong, Water Horse, and I Am Legend soundracks, for some recent ones he's done.
also I'm digging alot of minimalistic music. Philip glass and Steve reich mostly, but I'm an open listener to anything of the like.

It's amazing how much more music I've listened to since February (when I first posted on this thread) and how many more names I recognize. I seem to really like French composers in general, my favorites probly being Ravel and Debussy, but that could change. But aside from that, Grainger is my king. Like, best stuff ever. ^_^ Basically, I <3 band, and Grainger was brilliant at writing for it. And I must also say that I love Holst. The Planets = awesome. Aaaand, Copland. Super good stuff.

Man, there's a lot. But really, anyone but Dvorak D| He writes in weird keys and I just hate playing his music. I know it's SUPPOSED to sound nice, but when we play it, it sounds... interesting.

Lol. Our field show was Dvorak last year. Gag me.
I have a new one to add to the list. Eric Whitacre. His music inspires me.

There's a particular arranger my band really likes...Frank something, methinks. We play his music really well, like he writes for bands like ours.

Have you ever heard the song "October" for band. I can't think of the composer right now but man is it beautifal. It has a wonderful oboe and euphonium slos throughout the piece. ... err, this is a late reply, but "October" was written by Eric Whitacre. His music is simply breathtaking. My other favorites by him are Lux Aurumque for both symphonic band and a cappella choir (I may even like the choral version more, which is rare. It's simply gorgeous!). I CANNOT believe I forgot Holst in my initial post. Maybe that's because I hadn't heard his First Suite in Eb or the Second Suite in F yet. He's amazing (I was lucky enough to play a crappy arrangement of Jupiter in senior year, but didn't get the chance to play First Suite.). Man, there's a lot. But really, anyone but Dvorak D| He writes in weird keys and I just hate playing his music. I know it's SUPPOSED to sound nice, but when we play it, it sounds... interesting. And you have a Phantom Regiment avatar! I'm shocked you can listen to them, since they do a lot of Dvorak, Shostakovich, etc.

I just listened to "The Planets" today by Holst. The music is pretty amazing. And also Tchaikovsky is also on the list because of the Nutcracker. Along with the people who did the songs from Fantasia. =]

P.D.Q. Bach = The Best.
Don't get me wrong, I like serious pieces of music... but I haven't ever heard a composer as clever as this one. This guy is a genius. If you've never heard his music, youtube it. "Echo Sonata (for Two unfriendly groups of instruments)"... my favorite.
