yay for evil dark brass and low woodwinds! I like Shastakovich (esp. Symphony No. 8- it's written in 1! and has an interesting trumpet solo), Brahms and Bach as well. You mustn't forget Mahler. He wrote macabre pieces also... like Symphony No. 3, which has evil sounding brass and where the trumpets play the lowest note ever possible for the trumpet (which I forgot) I also like Concerto for Bassoon and Cello by Mozart, it's pretty interesting.

No, I know none of those songs. I think John Williams, Chuck Mangione, Tchaichovsky, Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori (those two did the Halo soundtrack) are my favorite composers.

Danny Elfman for the win!
I love his stuff. It's dark and maniacal and sounds absolutely amazing.
And I can't stand Frank Ticheli. I have never played a piece of his that I liked a lot. There's really no in-between with his euphonium parts, it's either ridiculously easy or ridiculously hard. Although Sun Dance was interesting, but the euph. part made no sense.

I love the Halo music! They are really good modern composers, but my favorite would have to be Frank Ticheli. I really like Vesuvius and Shenandoah. (top band played vesuvius, our band is playing Shenandoah)

(top band played vesuvius, our band is playing Shenandoah) I have all the Halo soundtracks. They sound amazing! Nice chord structure, and all of it is very well performed! Our band is working on the song Shenandoah right now, for contest. The tempo is extremely slow, though, about 58 bpm. What stuff does Frank Ticheli do?

Have you ever heard of Emma Lou Diemer? She does all this symphony stuff (all right, I am an orch dork.) The song I did with the orchestra was called Symphonie Antique.

As far as modern composers go, I've taken a liking to Robert W. Smith. He's written some of my favorite pieces we've played this year, like Symphony of Souls, and Ireland: Of Legend and Lore (awesome oboe stuff in there)

I really like the way John Phillip Sousa writes marches. Also, for jazz, Doug Beach has some really neat arrangements.
