This is for the people who have weird band traditions. For example... I live in TN, But my BD refuses to play Rocky Top. We play it for two parades a year, but thats all. Also, our drum major always says a prayer before we perform. But thats not really a weird band tradition. And this isn't exactly a tradition, but one of the older tenor saxes always gives me a hug when he sees me, and I normally end up on the floor b/c he's about a head and a half taller than me and he just about crushes me.

1. right before a contest, the entire guard karma caps eachother and knocks on eachother's heads. 2. i also tie the head DMs shoes (beats me why, but it's lucky i guess) 3. the guard has band-aids and stickers in matching spots under our uniforms. 4. seniority is everywhere (even in getting dot books) 5. Everyone dances to metalshop (including our football team) 6. Silence on the buses when we can see the school or the staduim.
there's others too that i cannot remember.

I'm from TX, so we have plenty of traditions.
1. If someone is injured during practice or during a game/show, their section leader and a drum major helps them off the field. 2. If something funny happens during practice the drumline does this...thing. All the drums together make the "dun dun dun-dun dun...dun dun" sound. Umm...yeah sorta hard to explain... 3. Imediately after the DMs dismise us, everyone starts yelling and screaming(like happy screaming). Kinda cheesy... 4. The Chicken Dance. I need not say more. 5. Right before we go on for a contest, we have this...handshake thingy...we go around doing it with every member of the band- it gives us a sense of unity and good luck i guess... 6. Prayer before each game and competition. 7. At games, in the stands, the cheerleaders do this...cheer-thingy. And we dance and stuff...really hard to explain. I don't really like this tradition cause it makes us look really immature in front of a lot of people. 8. Seniority. Not really as in Seniors. Just like...higher 'ranked' members have seniority over lower 'ranked' members. For example: Someone who has been on the drum line 3 years is given seniority over someone who has only been on the line 2 years, even if they're both Juniors.

1. gather round...everyone comes screaming into a huddle. 2. body breakdown...the brass guys always make weird noises 3. prayer before competition 4. someone is bound to forget socks at least once a season and speed to the nearest dollar tree. 5. seniors eat first at band camp. 6. the last day at band camp, seniors are allowed to drink coffee.

1. Seniority is applied to nearly everything - eating, bus seating, etc. 2. The sax section has some sort of cheer: a. My freshman year - "1, 2, 3, Sexyphones!" b. My sophomore year - "S-UNIT!" 3. Most people dance to the drumline cadence at home football games. 4. The trombone section does "Happy Trail" if we win a home football game. 5. If Usher's song "Yeah" comes on, the whole band boos. 6. Our famous cheer "Meat Machine" is cheered at least once at home football games. 7. Senior Days at band camp 8. The trumpet section has a three-note cheer that they play to notify the section to group together.
There's probably lots that I'm missing, too. =D

1:Fred the Wonder Rabbit! Its a rabbit carved out of wood and we used to take him everywhere we went, but he's starting to fall apart now,so we don't anymore.
2:The Coolest cheer evar! Give me a B!"B!" Give me a B!"B!" Give me a B!"B!" Give me another B!"B!" YET ANOTHER B!"B!" Give just one more B!"B!!!!" What does that spell?!
Then we do that thing where you move your finger over your lips really fast to make it sound like"Buhbuhbuhbuhbuh" or whatever.Kinda hard to explain, but it gets everybody in the stadium going when we do it.

at the end of every football game that we win, we do the snake around the band field. that's when you get in 2 lines and you play the fight song, and when we aren't playing, the percussion plays. the band just acts alike a snake around the field.

During the last 8 minutes of the 2nd quarter, we get in sections and "warm up." We'll go over stuff like when to mark time, whether we have our horns up or down at the end of each piece. We may play through a weak spot or important part. Then the Bd calls us into a circle to play a Bb and maybe scale stuff. Then we start each of our pieces to make sure we don't screw that up. After were done, We huddle in and say The Lords Prayer. We line up, and we pass down "clucks" Aka good luck in one word. That's About it.

We have inspirational speechs in the sax section that last the entirety of our warm-up and it really pisses the band off when we have freezing horns and they're all in tune. It's moving though, I've seen seniors cry, and it's not just girls it's guys too. It's crazy how close-knit we are as a section.

-we make fun of the guard 24/7 because they suck. - every band dance they play the time warp and we all dance to it. - when it gets to the chorus of the time warp everyone jumps 180 except the back row who stands there and waves at the rest of the people. (just started this year) -at the band banquet the last song is always piano man and we all kinda get into a circle with the seniors forming a mini circle in the middle and sing. -low brass dances to all cadences. - the trombone horsey. you take the slide, stick it between your legs and ride it like a horse. - tubas , you cannot avoid the dance.
all i can think of right now

We have many traditions so I know I'll forget a few tonight but I'll post them as I think of them.
Band Camp 1) Freshman Friday- We tell the freshman on that on the last night of band camp that the seniors throw them in the lake. Completly untrue, and quite impossible because there are no lakes at CMU. 2) Club AB (Anchor Bay)- The band camp dance that takes place the 2nd from last day at band camp. 2a) Senior Dance- At club AB the seniors perform a dance they have been learning over the summer. Has music from all the shows they marched in. 3) Toga- At breakfast on the last day the seniors take their bed sheets wear them like togas. 4) Senior Circle- Last night at band camp, after dark (same day as freshman friday) The seniors stand in a circle and pass around a lanturn and when it comes to them they tell about their experiences in maching band, what they have learned and often pass down a piece of advice. (I'll never forget my freshman year when my section leader told us "Always where white underwear at parades" She went on to tell us her freshman year she wore purple underwear under her white shorts and it rained so you could see them through the shorts. Also that year one of my best friends brother was a senior and he wrote the most inspiring poem about band I think it was called "Pride" I don't think anyone had a dry eye (well any of the girls).
Rehersals 1) Fight Song- All rehersals start with the playing of our Fight Song. If your not in the block by the end of the song, your late. 1a) Rah-Rah - Section leaders give high 5's to the rest of the section in the middle when we sing. 2) Dismissal- All rehersals end after we go through: DM: HEELS! BAND: TOGETHER! DM: TOES!! BAND: APART!! DM: STOMACHS!! BAND: IN!! DM: CHEST!! BAND: OUT!! DM: SHOULDERS!! BAND: BACK!! DM:CHIN!! BAND: PRIDE!! (PAUSE) DM: CHIN!! BAND:PRIDE!! (PAUSE, with the occassional PRIDE!! from a member not paying attention) DM: CHIN!! BAND: PRIDE!!
Football Games/Performances 1) 30 seconds of silence- After warming up and before performing we squish in around our BD and take 30 seconds to think about the upcoming performance. 2) Alto Dance- Before performing all the alto's stand in a circle and do the alto dance. 3) Drumline Love- last year at every football game one of our DM's went around and kissed each member of the drumline on the cheek. Was supossed to be for good luck but our football team didn't win any home games so I think it was opposite. 4) Alto Head-But- Two members of the alto section grab each others visors on our hats and head but each other. I think it was actually started by girls. 5) Senior Gifts- At the last home game most sections buy the seniors in heir sections gifts. One senior from each section gives a speech to the band. 6) Backward Hats- If we win the football game we put our hats on backward.
Personal Traditions 1) Skittles- At band camp or band trips me and my friends play poker or black jack for skittles.
I know there are more that I can't think of but I'll put them up later.

6) Backward Hats- If we win the football game we put our hats on backward. I got in trouble for doing that once. we've got the Floyd and the band dance. and we generally hate both.
